Hi
I am traveling on a long trip and I think I have a glow plug issue. Does anyone know the part number for the glow plug for the 1HZ engine? It’s a 2006 troopy normally aspirated (no turbo) engine.
Many thanks

Brilliant Felix that’s the same as I found. Many thanks for prompt reply.
I am in Canada and turns out Toyota don’t sell ANY diesels here. Cheers

Oh, that's a bit shit, can you get some parts shipped from the states. The LC scene is pretty big over there

Very envious of you touring over there, which part are you in?

Mmm now think it may be the fuel. Very helpful main Toyota guy said it could be the fuel quality which he said is v low in canada - apparently. Have added diesel conditioner and the car seems much improved. So will try that for a while and see if it was that. Car was fine running but very spluttery on cold starts.
I might order the glow plugs to meet us at a later stop - just to have them on board.

Trip started in Nova Scotia but we arrived in Newfoundland some days ago. Here for a month or so then back to NS. Terrific people and nice place. Can’t be done in a rush.

Nice easy fix if it is the crap fuel quality!

Amazing, have you shipped your car over there?

I've only been to BC, but loved it there, taking my LC there and heading to the northern territories would be amazing!

Yes shipped Liverpool to Halifax. Pretty straight forward. Happy to share details when I am back.

See if you can find a Mr Funnel , nobody makes shit diesel its just neglected tanks never get cleaned .

You may be right Shayne but it was a Toyota mechanic here who told me that Cad diesel isn’t great. Another traveller I met said the U.S. diesel also trips sensors and puts some diesel engines into limp mode. I don’t know what elements of their diesel isn’t like ours. But maybe they are wrong.
Obvs on my 1HZ I don’t have any of those type of sensors anyway.

My tanks are clean and I have a pre filter plus normal fuel filter (I changed both before setting out) on my car so I don’t think it’s debris as an issue for me.

The diesel sulphur additive has made the engine better behaved today.

But fuel characteristics are not my world so I am, as always , open to being educated.

Their storage tanks i mean , its always a problem with boat diesel . I recently put 500 litres through one of those Mr Funnel things and so much of it was water i ditched the lot .

what is the issue you are experiencing? what is making you think there is a problem with the glow pugs/ fuel? Was is just the cold morning spluttering?

1HZ engines are known for being able to run on anything, and having filled mine up with shit diesel all over Africa and never really experienced a problem other than lack of power, I'd be amazed if Canadian diesel is going to do much. I certainly didn't have any problems with the diesel in the US. More modern diesel engines might, but not the mighty 1HZ.

If it's just cold morning spluttering, start by getting your main battery checked. The long crossing normally drains them and leaves them empty for a while which has killed a few of mine on various trips, and mornings was when we started to notice they weren't starting the car well.

Just a thought...

Happy travels. Have you got a blog or anything?

Hi Shayne - yes I thought maybe water . Drained the main fuel filter but no water. So don’t think it’s that. Also done a few refills now from different sources and issues remains.
Hi Nick - yes that what I have experienced before (eg Africa) that the 1HZ will consume anything. I hadn’t thought it could be a fuel quality issue until the Toyota main garage head mechanic said Canadian diesel is poor quality (who knew?). He had recommended some diesel conditioner as they call it.

Basically there is some spluttering when I start on some mornings. There is a puff of black smoke and timing is off. Then engines catches and all is good. So was trying so think what the problem could be.
It’s not cold here at the moment. Battery is a new one and fully charged.
So before I went to Toyota I had thought it might be some of the glow plugs. As Toyota in Canada does not sell any diesels they didn’t have a diesel mechanic in the garage. But the head guy has worked on diesel in the past.

So I think options are
- glow plugs, failing or perhaps covered in carbon?
- blocked injectors?
- some sort of fuel issue. (I have checked pressure at the fuel filter before I start and it is high. So don’t think there is a pressure loss at that point. )

All other ideas welcome.
Cheers all.

P.s. No travel blog as too busy travelling ….but will do a write up later . Up near St Anthony’s at the moment, north tip of Newfoundland.

Could you disconnect/pull relay, or what ever controls the glow plugs and see if it makes any difference?

Sounds similar symptoms?

Good thread Felix. I see he never wrote up the conclusion after garage work. Have tried to nudge him even though it’s such an old entry.
I think if I disconnect the glow plugs it won’t start at all. Or am I missing something? Or are they not required above 10 degrees C?
Cheers

Before you crank it, how long do you wait for the glow plugs to warm up. From what I have read the relay can wait up to 20s before clicking off which can be heard. Does waiting a bit before trying to get it to crank make any difference to the start?

It certainly does make a difference on a 2H in a 60! Its about 8 to 12 seconds before it clicks then starts instantly

Ah really
Ok will try a long delay. Normally I have just waited for the glow plug light to go out. Normally about 3 seconds. I will wait longer and see if I can hear a click.
(This is a new thing so may imply glow plugs are reaching the end of their lives?)
Thanks
