80 Front axle carrier seal repositioning.

I'm rebuilding the front axle of my 95 80 series. The inner axle shafts on both the driver and passenger sides have diameter wear from the carrier seals.

I've read that you can press in the new seal deeper into the seal housing to line the seal up on fresh axle material.

Is this common and acceptable. I don't want to get the shaft by buying a new one I didn't need.
