80 Interest growing!

I guess this happens to most 80 owners, Im always being asked if i want to sell my 80 By random folk at the Super market or the Petrol station... Woke up this morning to another Envelope with a note in it, Stuck under the Wiper blade, Asking if i want to sell my Truck, This time a Gentleman named Tom, 'sez' he's from the Village.... Im 'gonna' call him and see how much money he has in his Pockets.... Iv asked this question before, I dont get the interest or the Demand for crazy prices, when the world is against the old Diesel Guzzler, And they want us to go Electric. I get the interest because they are a brilliant Truck.... Dilemma is, do i sell.... How long can the Market stay like this, Prices for 110/90 Defenders is Mental, Can the 80 LandCruiser still hold up in this crazy frenzy.........

It's an interesting point Higgy, I've had the same enquiries.
But for me the trouble is that, unlike the Defenders and I've owned a lot of Defenders, 110s & 130s for work etc where prices are ridiculous now! most people I've come across, like me, have found it difficult to put a quantifiable value on an 80! Whereas, I can see any old Defender and know exacrly where it sits price wise. But t with the 80 Series everyone seems to have a different idea! (and I know the old adage 'it's worth what someone's prepared to pay!) But I think the old Glass's Guide/Black Book method for the 80 just gets thrown out the window!
What does concern me though, is it's making the 80 more of a target for the 'scumbags' who don't believe in paying for things!!!
Anyway, it'll be interesting to here your findings with the mystery local.
I'll probably be buried in mine!!

There are a few reasons why i would sell, But i can never put my finger on which one it is.. Since i had to give up my workshop and Yard, I dont do as much as i used to, And apart from the Odd drive out along the South Coast at the weekend, And a bit of Fencing work for the Horses, It just sits on the Drive, Most of my Time now is spent with the Motor Bikes, And dare i say it, It lights more Passion in me than the Land Cruiser... Iv spent the Winter cosy in the Shed prepping the Bikes ready for Spring and Summer Getaway's, And never really given the cruiser a thought..... I wish people would Stop leaving Notes on my Windscreen... ..... Crazy Money would see it Gone, But it would have to be Crazy.... It would have to justify the pain of Selling..... But one of the questions was how long can this crazy price demand continue, Even for Defenders.... One day someone will announce they are worthless, and everyone will follow Suit and that will be that....

Unless you intend going down the electric route I can't see the point in selling a LC to make a quick profit and buy something else "similar" because all petrol/diesel drivers are going to get stuffed sooner or later.

If i did sell i wouldn't replace it with anything, Not a 4X4 anyway..... We never get winters in South East Kent, I can walk to the Horses to repair the fences, I dont do Trailer work anymore.... Im happy for it to sit on the Drive, 'Till' someone leaves a note on my Windscreen, Then i Start thinking 'Mmmm' maybe i should sell it.... Don't Know Towpack, Dilemma, Dilemma....

A good mate of mine was in exactly the same position 2 years ago (first lockdown)..... Big bike man!! (yes to both images!!) and he got into spending more time in his workshop, fettling his bikes, so sold his Defender, however, he still goes on about whether it was the right decision! But it definitely was..... because he'd done his off grid trips to Africa etc. and then had no other need for a 4x4. I dare say that point will come to all on this site...... just a matter of when!?!
In the meantime, if I ever get to do Sunny Suffolk to Cape Town, then perhaps my thoughts might sway!

For what it's worth my view is that motorbikes are amazing for certain trips, but pointless for big open landscapes. I would much prefer to return to Morocco in the LC than with any of my dirtbikes as the terrain isn't technical or narrow enough to justify a dirtbike. Same I think for most of Africa, and Australia. But if hardship is a desirable factor then yes a motorbike is the tougher / more epic journey.

Basically if you could have got there in a 4x4... IMHO you should have taken a 4x4. That's why I still have my 80 and can't wait to get out and about with it once more.

Diesel surely will have to be available for quite a few years to come? I do think the 80 series value will plateau out in real terms. The only real top money for classic that move into real age is for the really rare and/or beautiful. Some owners in the classic truck and car world have noted that pre war vehicles are not worth so much considering the age and effort that has gone into preservation. Some of the 50s cars and trucks are not perhaps going up so fast in real terms. It comes down to sometimes folk having spare money for something that they aspired to when young. The next generation may not appreciate the vehicle in the same way. Agricultural tractors are similar I feel.
There are of course exceptions to that idea, Land Rover series one, E Type and Doe Dual Drive (tractor) perhaps examples. The market for the 80 series is anyone's guess. My children are in their late 20s early 30s. Would they want an 80? I doubt it. I suppose the real off road fanatics may keep the demand as long as fuel available because of the capability and relatively uncomplicated mechanics?

I think diesel is going to be with us for a long long time, trucks that are filling up with a thousand litres every couple of days, I don't see the demand for electric HGV's yet, and the infrastructure for electric cars is simply not there. Most of this electric this and that is hype and pie in the sky.

@Higgy Over my time I have had many cars all different marques and ages, the 80 is the longest I have ever owned car, of course I have gone through the usual modified cars as well Rover V8 in a Ford Granada, then Rover V8 in a mark 1 escort, through to a 500 BHP Jagaur XJ12 C running 13's in street trim at the drag strip, in my opinion I have done the mods done the racing and ended with 80. I have never owned a motorbike although I have rode a few and they don't do it for me, many look the nuts but they simply don't press my buttons but you have both. The 80 does everything it says on the tin and more! Mine will stay with me until I am no longer able to drive it because of age or health and as @Shayne says what are you going to replace it with?

All this diesel going away sounds scary for new players like me. Owning LC is long term experience. First few years you learn to tame this beast, learn to take care of it, get it to 100% mechanical perfection, changing all old and at end of its life. Learn to be a mechanic. After all this it’s time to drive it for what it’s made for.
By the time I do all this full diesel ban might come

The ban set out is on the production of new diesel vehicles . Just forcing their agenda and hoping manufacturers will answer all the questions .

3 years later the question will be what shall we do with all these used electric cars nobody will buy

Your Right there Nick .... That's why i said in an earlier Post, That i wouldn't replace it with another 4x4.. Coz there is nothing out there to replace it.... I know Diesel is going to be around for a long time yet, But one of my original Questions was How long will the High price demand be on the 80 series and even Defenders.. When folk keep asking me to sell it and leaving notes on my windscreen, It gets tempting.... Sorry Karl, But there is no such thing as an upgrade from an 80..
