I have a 1996 Toyota FZJ80 Land Cruiser with about 226k miles and completely stock. Within the last couple months I have had a number of transmission issues. The transmission seems to slip when shifting from 2nd to 3rd. It only seems to slip if I try to aggressively accelerate. Additionally, most of the time it doesn't like to shift until I am around 5k rpm(especially while still on the throttle). I replaced the trans oil filter and the fluids and added a quart of Lucas when I did. I found no shavings in the fluid.
Now today I had the O/D light start flashing after coming back into town. When not on the highway I usually don't have the O/D on, and I didn't notice any difference in the way the truck drove, though I was decelerating when I noticed the light. I shut the truck off and started it back up and within a few seconds the light started flashing again.

On a side note, it was around +10 deg F today with about a 20 mph wind. I don't know how much this might affect it but I thought it might be pertinent information.

I know nothing about autos but it could be the torque converter......there will probably be someone along shortly who knows more about it...

The flashing overdrive light indicates a fault that can be read, can't remember how you do it though sorry, someone will be along later to help.

Erm.. sorry, wrong room, but im sure someone will be along later..

I think Chris is has a split personality- probably spending so much time on the landrover forum that he's missed this thread

Sorry I can't help you with this. AT's just aren't my thing. You either need someone who's really got good knowledge of them or someone with the same issue who cured it. Mussy has had quite a few issues like this recently. Ultimately slipping is a result of worn friction bands and that's terminal. But there are things along the way that have the same symptoms so it can be difficult to diagnose. I would say that it's pretty much never the torque converter though. That's a solid state piece of kit and unless you've abused it, it's virtually indestructible.

As Chris said I have had some issues with the auto box on 2 of my 3 80's. I am by no means a specialist or a mechanic, but I can tell you that changing the oil and make sure your kick down cable is set correctly can make a huge difference. Also in my thread http://www.landcruiserclub.net/forums/showthread.php/55946-Another-autobox-problem-on-another-80 , you will get some download for manuals that can teach you how to diagnose the issue with your flashing o/d light.

hope this helps,

mussy

I would study the workshop manual or get someone else to on your behalf. Years ago I could cure slipping auto boxes by simply adjusting the drive bands which was a routine job as they were a wearing item. I don't even know if the Toyo box has drive bands but something may be adjustable.

Thanks for the advice. Ill return with the final results so everyone can learn from my issues.

I'm tempted to say check the throttle position sensor. It's had a lot of movement by 226k. I accidentally disconnected mine while looking for the IP solenoid connector and that caused the overdrive light to flash (though I didn't check how many times). This may be unrelated and is just a hunch but with it refusing to change until 5k rpm it sounds plausible and is easy to find and potentially easy to test. Wiring and connectors are worth checking for breakage and corrosion too.

Good luck with it and look forward to hearing you've fixed it.

Hi,is yours an A442F or an A343F?it should be an A343F as is a gasoline engine, if it has over heated, then I would suggest to check the four sensors that go on the valve body, not to worry, you just need to remove the filter and you will see them, if you need to replace any...the A442F is the same as the newer A450, only the valve body remains from the A442...also, if you don't have it yet, get an oil cooler for your tranny

Sorry, also, I have a HDJ80 with 1HD-T coupled to an A442F with free wheel locking hubs from factory in my VX trim, dual fuel tanks (factory) and dual AC (factory)
