A good start would be to get it recharged

My 80 did exactly the same a couple of years ago, a vac and recharge was all the was needed.

What year is your 80?

its L reg 93,had it charged a few times before but dont think i lost the revs lifting when it kicked in before?

What have they been charging it with?

93 will probably be the old R12 gas which is obsolete now.... have they been putting 134a in? There should be a sticker under the bonnet somewhere telling you what's in there.

Low gas pressure will prevent the system operating and potentially damaging the compressor .R12 is now no longer manufactured. Depending on aircon type/age some conversion work and/or component replacement may be necessary to enable R134 to be used. Some older type hoses are porous to R134 which means the gas will gradually leak away requiring periodic re-gassing. An aircon specialist may be your best bet rather than one of the multi-service outlets that are now offering quick/cheap regassing.

If your system is the old R12 type, you can have it re gassed with R426A without changing any components.... this is what I did with mine 15 months ago and she is still ice cold when needed

If you have had it recharged in the last five years with no problems, then I am sure it will be a R134a system. Worth checking the condensor for any oily patches.

Dave.
