Well i have now received my latest batch of 4wd and offroading magazines from Oz.
We really are weak with our UK publications, the oz ones have (and i counted) just one land rover in them, and that was in an ad!
Lots of tests of equipment where they bolt them on, test them to distruction and then make the manufacturer stand there and explain what went wrong or right.
Now where to start :D

sounds good are uk mags are full of s*** landrovers like this months 4x4 magazin where they say the rangerover is better than the new landcruiser v8

I like Overland Journal they are pretty neutral with regards to vehicle makes. Anything from a 250cc bike to an overland truck camper.
Sometimes they feature a Toy, Land Rover, merc G, hilux, tundra, ural, jeep, etc. etc.

Fairly objective too, they never stand 2 vehicles head to head and state this is the better one. Mostly judge them by their merits and faults. We do have a mind of our own and don't want predigested food or opinions!

I can understand vehicle brand specific mags, if you can fill the pages then why not.
Just keep in mind that mud and dirt is both universal and quite unique at the same time

Over the holiday period, whilst the wife was shopping, I was bored so popped into news agent and was browsing a 4x4 offroad mag (not sure which one) and they did a "ultimate" 4x4 review broken into different categories, and surprise surprise I think the oval badged vehicles won every group they were in

I was going to purchase it, but clearly so biased that I saved my money!

Sounds like lots of the tyre shoot-outs - Michelin is apparently a major sponsor/advertiser in these mags and also of the tyre tests, and surprise surprise BFG always win or come tie first  I'm not saying they aren't good tyres but I think most of us would prefer something a bit more objective  Same applies for LR and the 4x4 mags in this country.

The mags are there to make money, which they do by sponsorship mostly and a bit through subs - the mags are not actually there to give the reader the most accurate or objective info. Cynical but true

Well hence why I chose with my feet and left it behind. I must say this and newspaper reporting (well all news really) does my head in. I just want a factual report not some numpties view of the world.... oh well

I do look forward to my oz mag dropping through the letterbox each month

But it's all relative though. 4x4ing in the UK is like St John's Ambulance; we have all the "toys", a lot of of which are superficial and we drive down a 234m leafy lane in Wales and make a cup of tea afterwards.

Australia, NZ, SA et-al have real stuff. To drive for 10 hours on a gravel "road" and not see another vehicle and have total faith in the equipment you have, that is fun. Not "Hello? RAC? Yes, I'm between junction 5 and 6"

All media is targeted towards this...

I'll go continue my cry in the corner. :violin:

Now i have the mags i can always send off an email about international subscriptions if anyone is interested.

The two i have from memory are 4x4 World and Overland.

Just found this site that will do international subs

I get 4x4 Australia from the link Paul has posted. Would like to get Australia 4WD Action but the postage is $225 for a $111 subscription, total $336! I don't like it that much :(

A good mate of mine gets this mag. It truly is off road porn and has a very high Toyota content. Some of the articles go into a lot technical detail, especially when they are explaining reasons for component failure.

To top it all off they seem to do a DVD with most issues, I've watched three so far and they are top notch. Makes you want emigrate immediately!

Cheers,

Scott.

I borrowed a copy off TonyS once, good mag. I'm assuming the DVD is why the carriage is so expensive compared to 4x4 Australia.

Yep 4x4 action for me. It is the best mag out there. I have seen them all when been there. The issues are always 250-300 pages, so much in them.

There is a whole 4x4 community on here, the forum is great, loads of knowledge there. Great builds too.

The dvds are great too, if anyone is interested,I can post them out(but would like them back). They are in every issue. Some of the stuff is quite basic, but generally there is something to learn. Recently they took the new 200 and 150 upto Cape York at the end of the wet season. Major river crossings, and the 200 was pulling a camper trialer. Its also chipped to stupid amounts of power.

It is costly, but I dont smoke or go to the pub much, thats my excuse for being addicted anyway!!

Wish we could get more of the gear here. Bugga, want to go back now.

You should rent your copies to me Tony to subsidise the cost ;)

No worries with that ,Jon. There's a pile here if your passing, DVDs too. Will catch up soon.

You can catch a ferry on Friday and by Monday you can be starting a real adventure, a couple of days after that you can be in the desert and drive for hours without seeing hardly anyone else.

It really is not that far away.. :)
