Be careful out there

Sad story.

There's no guaranteed safe way of this type of rescue, but the odds are he didn't take the most basic precautions, such as a bag over the strap to dampen the effects of a breakage.

I'll wager there was a shackle involved, though I do know of a very experienced Discovery owner who had a broken strap alone punch a hole in his windscreen. This guy was particularly unlucky for it to score a direct hit on him.

Soft shackles the way to go maybe?

I can't quite bring myself to trust them. I suspect I'm wrong, but when in a tight spot you need to trust your kit.

Does anyone here use them and can give a first-hand opinion?

The only thing I can say is that Sussex 4x4 Response used to have a guy who was in recovery all his life and he suggested them. He took their off road recovery course and I wound say he was darn good at it. If they were in any way not good I think he would have said so. He did suggest making our own from offcuts of Dyneema.
