I had it in my head the pump was driven off the cam belt. Id changed the pump only a couple of years ago too..

man the memory fades..:icon-biggrin:
 
In my set up, not wishing to be smug, I have an in line Kenlowe water pump which is there to run the heat exchanger for the hot water. If I have water pump issues, I could flick that on. OK so it's untested in combat, but that's what it is for and it certainly pumps the water round the engine when it's not running. Very easy to fit and wire in. OK so if the pump went and water was running out, I'd need to keep stopping, but if it was the belts, I'd probably be OK.
 
The length of the belt also affects the life. If the belts were under load but not moving they would never break. It's going round the pulley that stresses them and wears them. A long belt will last longer than a short one doing the same job.
