My 120 has a really annoying noise, it's hard to describe, I say drone in the title but I think it sort of sounds like a drone, I can't really say exactly. It's not a hum, I don't think it's a boom either, I suppose a drone is the best way to describe it.

In the last 1000 miles I have changed the front 2 wheel bearings quality Fag / Schaeffler brand.and got the rear diff rebuilt. The rear diff had a load of slop / play where the shaft connects onto it and when I backed off the throttle it was noisey. I thought all the noise was from the rear diff, but either the freshly rebuilt diff still has some noise in it or there are other sources at play.

The 2 rear wheel bearings seemed ok when spinning by hand when I had the half shafts pulled out a bit when removing the diff.

The noise is worse at 60 - 75 mph, it seems to be pretty constant, whether on throttle or off throttle. If I shift the gear stick into neutral and let the clutch back up, just free wheeling the noise persists.
It gets louder when I'm going faster but it's still there even lower down the range.

Could it be tyre noise? I have 2 new Zeetex HT1000 VFM tyres on the rear, mid-range tyres I believe. The front 2 are branded "Horizon" , I dodn't put these on and they have plenty of thread. What do noisey tyres sound like? Has anyone had these tyre brands and were they noisey?
I might swap the wheels from my 90 series onto it and see if any difference.

Exhaust noise even, doesn't sound exhausty, not raspy or boomy, but I'll consider anything at this stage. The back box is new.

To give an idea of the loudness, it's loud enough where it's just really really annoying that you nearly don't want driving it. With the radio on at normal level, you can hear it coming through.

I had a mate listen to it and he thought it was the front pass wheel bearing, I sort of did think that way too when he said it, but obviously it wasn't.

I'm struggling to say if it's coming from the front or rear or middle even.

I'm open to suggestions! :)

Does the exhaust manifold have a metal guard on your truck , its astonishing the noise that can make when loose and vibrating .

And search the 120 section for intake rattle , I recall something about vibration noise where it passes through the wing .

If its like an electric motor sound which is relative to road wheel speed it will be the rear wheel bearings. Just having the same problem with my 120. Had a bugger of a job diagnosing it. There is no play in the bearing and it feels fine turning it but I had it off the floor on Sunday ( fork lift each end) and got it up to 50 mph and you could really hear it on the OSR wheel bearing just like on the road.
Have booked it in at a Toyota inclined garage for both rears to be changed.
