Cheap, unfashionable 4x4

Is there such a thing as a good 4x4 that will do 40mpg? why not go for something you like and do a bio fuel conversion, might not do 40mpg but it will be as cheap as chips to run, or maybe smell like chips when its running.

If you want a serious 4x4, totally underrated, get an Isuzu Trooper/Bighorn. The 3.1D (under no circumstances buy a more recent 3.0). Same internal dimensions as a 70/80 series, with more leg room in the rear seat. As reliable as a Cruiser, for a third of the price.

Major drawback, does not look as bigass as an 80 LC... I could live with that.

Thanks for all the suggestions. To clarify, I don't need a "proper" 4x4. I have one. That's why I'm on a Land Cruiser forum Ground clearance will do me. I'm trawling ebay and autotrader based on some ideas now. Although I immediately found a tidy looking twin cab Hilux just round the corner, which is very tempting.
