Gearbox (manual) issue - please help!

Anyone have any experience on manual gearboxes..? My '02 Colorado GX (1KD-FTV) with manual box has started to "grind" when shifting to second gear out of the blue. Mr. T replaced the clutch (+ release bearing, etc.) about 5000miles ago with a genuine part so the clutch is working fine in my opinion.

I've replaced the gearbox & transfer case oil yesterday to make sure the oil and oil level is not the problem, but the issue still remains... Stationary or at slow speed/rev's all is fine, but at higher rev's/speed there is this grinding sound if you try to shift to second gear. Only second gear - the others are fine. Seems a bit worse down-shifting, but I guess that is due to the higher rev's/speed. I guess if you want to force it into gear it will still go, but I'm just nursing it now and try to avoid second alltogether...

In my opinion all the signs point to the syncro on the second gear (which I really hope it's not...) Any ideas, advice or tests I can do to try and pin-point the problem before starting to take the gearbox apart?

Many thanks in advance!

Sounds like it might be synchro

also might be worth checking is there a small plastic something or other at the insertion point of the gearstick into the housing. have heard of this failing and causing issues with gear changes though i cant recall on which model besides the 80s.

good luck

I have the same problem with third, synchro completely shot. I either crunch it in gear or double-de-clutch it in. That depends on how long you have where getting in gear is essential!

Second on mine is not good either, but not as bad as third. I'm trying to source a second hand box at the moment, the bearings sound rough too, on the 1st/2nd gear shaft. Replacement parts would run to a hefty sum as well as the specialist labour to fit them, so a replacement box is probably my best (and cost effective) option.

Karl, if you're reading this, please check your PMs!

Cheers!

I fear this will be something i will have to tackle in the future , reverse has always been temperamental but yesterday i found i had to drive forwards about 5 foot (1 foot at a time) before i could get into reverse . My truck hasn't reached 100k on the clock yet !

At least I've got 340k km on mine and 18 years behind it! :icon-biggrin:
