You know that awkward moment, someone has given/made/fixed something for you and you then ask "how much do I owe you?" And they say "call it a drink".

As there is no mention of "the drink" bring traded on the floors of London, what exactly is the value of "a drink" and is there a sliding scale to that value on complexity or time put into whatever work led to the moment of bartering.

I hate that moment in case my definition of "a drink" was far less than the other persons expectation.

Well by saying 'a drink' something not too large is implied, so give him a can of coke. :laughing-rolling: :laughing-rolling:

We look after pools for a living and one of our bestist mates asks us to plug in their pump and start their pool every year - we charge her the grand total of a pot of chicken liver Patte' cos she makes the best in the world! Chemicals she pays for, its just 30mins of my knowledge and time before she cooks dinner!

Good attitude, if I do a favour and it costs me nothing I expect nothing in return. If something is forced on me I accept it with gratitude.

It all depends on what you did for them...if you mowed their lawn then a bottle of wine is fine, if you rebuilt their extension after the tornado then a bit more would be expected....

If a guy asks only for "a drink" I'd give him the equivalent of a couple of pints, but don't ask me what that is 'cos I'm out of touch completely! Say a tenner in London and a fiver anywhere else?

On one trip to London a while back, there was a guy asking for change outside Bank underground station, so I dropped a 50p piece into his open palm. He said, keeping his palm open, "I can't even get a cup of coffee for that" so I took it back... :eusa-naughty:, cheeky ingrate!

I would evaluate what had been done and its convenience to me. A "drink" to me is around a tenner, ( beer is about £2.50 - £3.00 round here) if help extends to in depth knowledge or more than a couple of hours or both then a "score" maybe more appropriate.
I usually drop the local tyre firm half a dozen crates of Carling off once a year as a thankyou for the service they give me, ( ask Grant !! )

I don't know about anyone else but when I say to someone "call it a drink" I don't really expect anything more than a bit of gratitude and maybe a favour in the future.

Maybe I should up my rates.

When a mate helped me work on my 4Runner (like the other weekend) I shouted him lunch twice and a round of drinks in the evening (and an afternoon beer) I can't really help in other ways, but I do need to get him a blank P38 Range Rover key this week from somewhere...

Depends on what the drink pays for , a good piece of advice means just buy him a pint when you see him , but if he got stuck in and saved you a fortune as a result i usually call it a tenner an hour rounded off to the nearest 50 . Some will take it and some won't but all will be happy to help again should the need arise . I imagine your worry Trev is offending by not offering enough . A fair price and a favour owing usually gets more than a 50% discount .

Just shifted 10 pallets of blocks to their relevant positions on the new build next door ( with a forklift ) saving a massive amount of effort for the builder. I couldn't take a shilling of him really as it only took 10 min. I've just been informed I've 20 pints paid in at the village pub as they rang me to check it wasn't a wind up.

RESULT:icon-biggrin: YESSSSS

Proper definition of a "drink"

soon to be very very drunk.

Given that I probably owe Andy a favour, I'd say drink is worth around 0.001p

Sounds fair to me.

Tonight is probably the best time to repay Andy's favour... Sounds like he'll be too p!ssed to realize he's been ripped off:lol:

I had a situation like this last night. My mate came over to disconnect some plumbing... I said "how much do I owe you?"

He said "Dont worry about it, anytime I'll help you out!"

I said "Here's a £10 buy yourself a drink"

I never want somebody to go out of their way to do something for me and not to make a gesture!

TBF I wouldn't have shifted the 10 tonnes of blocks by hand and a wheelbarrow for any amount, neither would the builder/brickie guy. It probably saved him a good half day if not longer.
I reckon he wants the use of me and the truck again??

I remember hodding concrete blocks what seemed like endlessly when we built the extension on our house in South Wales. I'd never (be able to) do that again, it's no wonder I've got back problems now

It it was a big extension too, the old house became one corner of the final plan, 4 times the original floor area!

HaHa, still not finished now when I google it, and that was 12 years ago
