Does any one know if the low beam part of the lamp stays on when I switch to high beam?

Or is it an 'either or' but not both.

I don't believe that it does. It's either or...

No, deffo either or. Just look at the -12V wire. Same size as both the +12V wires. If it was 'both' it would be at least one size larger in CSA. Some twin headlight motors (eg BMW) leave the dip headlight on and the main beam switches on as a separate unit, giving the best of both worlds.
