LJ70 Build Thread!

Great news about your house Ben, and about the trip back to the UK,
If you're going to be anywhere near Morden (end of the Northern Line) do drop in for a cuppa.
You can give me an estimate for that staircase. :icon-biggrin:

Hi Ben have a good Top Tough Truck you wii Love it
I wood love to go one day .
Tonytoyota .

Congrats on getting the house Ben. Best wishes from the spice isle mate.

Thanks guys.

Just having dinner and in less than an hour I will be on my way to Tough Truck.

13 hour drive to get there. :sleeping-sleep:

Congrats on the house, has it got much room for working on the LJ? Also found these and thought they'd give you an idea for the sj tube doors

https://www.4xinnovations.com/Tube-Door-Slam-Latch-Kit-Included-with-all-door-sets_p_96.html

Yes lots more room!

I will have an entire double garage to myself. Its got a nice high roof and door and looks perfect.

The main issue I have here is that it isnt secure so I dont want to leave all my tools out. At the new place I will be able to work on LJ in the evenings and just leave all the tools where they are and close the door till the next day. I'm really looking forward to building a work bench and getting it all setup in there.

Might sound sad but I really miss my vice! So to have it setup on a bench again where I can use it will be great. :icon-biggrin:

Living with Erin is going to be great aswell!

Shes my best friend over here and we get on great! :icon-cool:

I'm so excited!!!!!!!!!!! :violin:

Thanks for the link, there cool!

I will show them to my boss and hopefully he can order some. :icon-wink:

Let me know when you want a trip out Ben, maybe we can go The Lakes :) .... we're having our first venture in Cumbria in 2014 on 7/8June. As ever i have created two monster days for us to go at.

Well guys I'm finally home from Tuff Truck 2014!

That was without doubt one of the best weekends of my life! It was bloody amazing!!!!

Despite having to film all the action for the official DVD and 4WD TV I still managed to completely fill an 8GB SD card! :wtf:

So I've got over 900 pics to sort through and a load of videos. :icon-cool:

I'm hoping to make a start tonight. :icon-wink:

Only 3 days at work this week, then a day at TAFE, then I move house!

Let me know when you want a trip out Ben, maybe we can go The Lakes :) .... we're having our first venture in Cumbria in 2014 on 7/8June. As ever i have created two monster days for us to go at.

Awesome!

Will be great to get back out with you and the guys.

Have you tried applying for a pass this year, for that lane which I've forgotten the name of?

Hi Ben, Those rear lights that you fitted early on in the build. Did they fit straight in place of the old ones and if so what were they off. All the best from Grenada! Richard

Hi Richard,

Yes they fitted straight on. The original set came from Australia via ebay.com.au. The second set came from a company in Poland.

They all bolt straight on without issue but it is necessary to alter the wiring as the wiring that comes with the lights has the wrong end on it. In the end I actually used part of a wiring loom off a 4-Runner as I wanted to use genuine Toyota bulb holders into the lights as the bulb holders that came with the lights didnt fit great and didnt have a rubber seal around the bulb holders like the genuine ones so kept filling full of mud and water and the bulb holder would some times fall out completely with the vibrations. :icon-ugeek:

Toyota do do genuine ones but they would be expensive. :icon-biggrin:

If you need a hand this end sourcing and/or posting some over to you give me a shout.

Thanks Ben. I'm having a think about the rear end of the cruiser as I'm having some bodywork done due to the sea air rotting the body and peeling the laquer coat off the paintwork. Problems of living near the sea. Thanks will let you know if I need to go further. All the best with your new move. Richard

I'm hoping to get an update up soon but I'm going to be without internet for atleast a few days.

Tuff Truck 2014 Day 1

OK guys..............................

First off apologies about not updating this thread sooner!

Things have been pretty hectic the last few weeks what with moving into my own place and all. Also I've been waiting to have my new internet connected! :icon-smile:

Anyway..........................

Heres the first instalment of my weekend at Tuff Truck filming. :icon-cool:

Friday evening I set off for Tuff Truck with Danny and his family in his Patrol. We drove for 6 hours and then stayed in a cabin next to a river for the night.

The next morning.

13774772485_05710a878c.jpg

After another 6 hours driving we arrived at Tuff Truck.

13774771353_4968dfd4e4.jpg

13774770703_2408ec57a6.jpg

I got my wristband, ticket and meal ticket.

13774769405_ce00ef8be3.jpg

Driving onto the site to find our camp site we were immediately greeted by awesome looking comp trucks!

13774768605_449e2e7485.jpg

I got given my shirt and another wristband, meaning I could now go anywhere!

13774769023_96dbacab70.jpg

13775113104_fd692c5333.jpg

I had a wonder round and found this awesome buggy in the Dirt Comp magazine tent!

13775110794_441b70c17a.jpg

My ARB swag for the next few days.

13774765113_9d51106dca.jpg

It was raining off and on while we settled in to our camp and went to the catering tent and got dinner.

The catering tent was a really god setup and all the different crews, marshals and police all got well fed!

13775109164_224bbc704c.jpg

So waterproof clothing was required!

13774762835_20aabf44f5.jpg

The cars began lining up for the night stages.

13774762455_6e9a2841dc.jpg

13774763013_6410d221fa.jpg

13774761755_66808ee5b8.jpg

The engineering on the tucks was amazing! 4 wheel hydro steer on portal axles and huge 40"+ tyres seemed to be very popular! As did bare chromoly axles all beautifully TIG welded together! :icon-twisted:

13775106754_1fac599484.jpg

The rain showed no sign of letting up as me and the rest of the crew prepared for our evenings work.

13774760695_53e571b659.jpg

The night stages were split into 2. There was the mud stage which is surrounded by cheering spectators and there was the Mystery Night Stage.

The mystery night stage is top secret with no spectators allowed and non of the drivers are allowed to see the course before they drive it. They literally leave the start line and have to drive whatever is in front of them!

So half the teams do one stage one night and then they all swap over on the second night.
For my first nights filming I would be on the mystery stage with presenter Simon and some of the other crew.

A few of the cars making their way to the stage.

13775106034_afdda32fa9.jpg

13774759735_60a771be37.jpg

13774759793_3cce8c9129.jpg

We walked to the stage ready for filming.

13774758973_6c5fcaa7aa.jpg

Here the teams would have 2 options as to which line they took. They could take the normal line on the right or the could take the bonus line between the huge boulders on the left.

13775103164_ce2f95d8b5.jpg

13775102694_3d84ccc8e8.jpg

So the teams have to descend down these huge boulders in darkness!

13775101944_3ba1a23638.jpg

13774756155_bb61ee509a.jpg

Looking back down the course.

13774756153_bc29ff2c71.jpg

The first few teams lined up at the start gate waiting for night fall.

13775100284_07c71cee72.jpg

The yellow car is owned by the event owner and is being driven by Dave Cole, who had flown in all the way from the USA. Dave Cole is the man behind King of the Hammers!

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_of_the_Hammers

We began the filming with presenter Simon saying a few words about the event.

13774754385_4cbeb50aac.jpg

Even the recovery vehicles were struggling to get into position on the slippery terrain.

13774753355_502d8f6edb.jpg

13775098264_e2fbb958c7.jpg

As we waited around I looked for good positions to film from.

13775098054_216067e2cb.jpg

Soon darkness fell and the racing began!

13774752415_0888ccbc2f.jpg

Dave Cole walked it and made it look very easy!

The first roll over of the night.

13775094514_bb526191ed.jpg

13775094384_0840c918cf.jpg

Lots of beautiful TIG welding on display, especially those chromoly axles!

13774748565_350858dda7.jpg

13775221564_7beba0fcaa.jpg

The recovery team were soon in action removing the truck so the racing could continue.

13774745753_d88305b6d0.jpg

13775090584_a28dfc3b10.jpg

The recovery team soon had it the right way up and off the course.

13774739583_cd74837d5f.jpg

They actually DNF'd (did not finish, in the allotted time) so the marshal was trying to get them off the course and said just go back a bit..............

We stayed till about 11pm then headed back to camp. A great first night at Tuff Truck.

Now I must point out that I missed out on taking some amazing pics as I was there to do a job and I had to be professional and try and get the best, usuable footage I could for the TV show and Tuff Truck DVD using the film camera I had been given.
So a lot of the pics and videos I managed to get for myself/for this thread were taken when I couldnt film/there wasnt anything to film!

But saying that I did get some awesome pics and some really cool videos as you will see on the Saturday and Sunday instalment which will be coming soon.

Thanks Gav. :icon-biggrin:

Technically I'm not yet.

They sent me the router but said a technician wont be able to get to the local exchange to switch the line on till Monday or Tuesday.

So I borrowed Erins dongle. :shhh:

Great report Ben, at this rate mate you'll have your own TV show. Loving Elmo, could work on Lil' Blue

Great stuff Ben, well worth the wait, mate:thumbup:

Those trucks are works of art, hydro steer looks just gorgeous, I wonder how it would handle on the road? Is it legal for road use?

Superb Ben, looking forward to the w/e....:clap::clap:
