Be careful what you wish for Andy… I got a feeling it's going to be wall to wall puppy from now on… at least until she eats the seats in the new truck…!! [emoji11][emoji11]

Then it'll be who's idea was it to get a dog anyway? we should have got a
mini-tortoise.gif
, tortoise don't eat seats!

Thanks guys.

We may not be able to collect Lexi today after all as the money still hasnt cleared in the breeders account.

So we may have to wait till Tuesday which is my next day off as its a national holiday to celebrate Australia day! :flags-australia:

Back to the new cruiser....................

I could build a one off vehicle like Shayne & Firewout have both suggested and that would be seriously cool! :icon-cool:

But I like the fact you can still buy a brand new 70 series! The last of Toyota's tuff vehicles! The replacement 70 is due within the next few years and if the LandCruiser evolution is to continue the way it has been going then it wont have a live axle at the front, it wont be square, boxy, utilitarian and strong!

It will be bigger, weaker, curvier and more of a road vehicle with a heap of fancy electronics.

So I'm keen to source one of the last truly tough 4wd's that you can still buy new! :icon-twisted:

I appreciate that most buyers over here dont want a style sided tub, as its obviously less practical for pallet/hay bale loading. But I still think its a shame that Toyota dont even offer it as an option, as I'm sure they would sell some and it could just be fitted while the truck is on the production line in Japan, like all the ones destined for other over seas markets.

I've been thinking for a while that a detachable pod would be a good thing and its something I will design to fit on top of the style sided tray and extend over the cab, with a bed above the cab and below that a lounge/kitchen area. :icon-biggrin:

But for the majority of the time it would just be set up with the style sided tray and I'd like to buy/build a sort of roller shutter style cover for the top of it, so I have a nice secure area for tools and if I want to carry a big load/materials/motorbikes, I can just open the shutter up fully and have an empty usable tray.
:icon-cool:

Something like this:

http://www.blueys.com.au/rolltops/

Thats something that is difficult to do with the trays that Toyota offer here as all 3 sides fold down. The way people have secure storage on the backs of ute's/pick up trucks here is to bolt lockable tool boxes all over the trays, but that kind of takes a lot of the practicality away from having a big tub IMO.

The amount of utes I see here with boxes bolted all over the back of them, and insecure materials and tools just left sitting in the tray, particularly tradesman and utility companies, I cant help but think why didn't they just buy a van like the rest of the world would do! It would be a lot more practical, secure and make more sense!
Granted in outback areas or if they need some off road ability then a 4wd ute makes sense but the vast majority of them never see so much as a dirt road. :icon-rolleyes:

Shayne if you have seen a v8 d4d you would understand they are amazing cruisers. I certainly would love one.

Good luck Ben hope you get sorted soon if you need help sourcing a bed in sa I can put you in touch with a chap in Toyota there. What's the price on the double cab in aus?

Thanks mate.

Very handy to know, I will give you a shout nearer the time if Toyota Australia flat out refuse to order me one with a style sided tray, which I suspect they will. :icon-smile:

The list price is currently $71,700 (£35,000) which I think is a lot of car for the money and I suspect I'd be able to get them to knock a few thousand off that.

Demountable campers are a good option; I like the Travelander ones as they are quite low profile (lower centre of gravity, and about the same height as the cab roof so no damage from trees etc)... but as always most of the designs are a compromise to meet the needs of the majority... hence why I have my own trailer planned, and someone lined up to build it.

Mate who is the boily use an RA Rodeo ute, and has his boxes on the tray held in place with a ratchet strap. Means he can take them off if he needs to easily, and the big one is too damn heavy to lift full anyway! NSW it's a really big thing not to have an uncovered load, and is clamped down on quite heavily especially here in regional NSW.

With the utes, there's a lot that were available as hi-rider (Ford Ranger at the moment for example) or similar names where the ride height was the same as the 4wd but with 2wd - very much like Toyota USA did with the 130 series 4Runner, and you can get with the Kluger/RAV4 and a lot of the other soft-roaders on the market.

I questioned the lack of vans as well... but there aren't many available really on the Aus market - there's the HiAce and iLoad, but in terms of small vans (Kangoo sized etc) very few, and the large vans are the Transit, Iveco, Sprinter etc, which (apart from the Ford) don't have a great service network outside of the capital cities - our nearest Renault dealer is 100km, whilst Mercedes is probably 200km... Korean or Japanese? In town...

We got her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This morning shortly after my last post the breeder messaged us to say that she would never normally let a puppy go without payment in full, but as we had shown here pics of the online banking transfer, she would trust us and let us go and pick up Lexi today!!!!!

:banana-dreads::banana-skier::banana-dance::banana-rainbow::banana-blonde::banana-angel::banana-ninja:

A 3 hour drive later and we were there! :icon-biggrin:

And we were soon on our way again with our little girl for the 3 hour drive home. :icon-cool:

She actually slept for most of the journey back and was really well behaved and didn't even have any accidents on the towel.

DSCN6041_zpsvinoqkck.jpg

We got her home and carried her straight out to the garden so she could have a wee.

DSCN6075_zpsilxdw6z9.jpg

She had some dinner.

DSCN6060_zpsz0bhldq1.jpg

And a play.

DSCN6057_zpsesbrewr2.jpg

We've cleared some of the furniture we dont want destroying out of the dining area and after picking up a cheap second hand stair gate off Gumtree, I fitted it with some more pallet wood to contain her in the kitchen at night and when were out during the day.

So far she has been incredibly well behaved and hasnt had any accidents in the house!

We're totally in love with her! :romance-adore:

New motor would be good, it'd stand out just with the colour. I'd suspect Re sale value would never be an issue!

Lexi is very cute and will keep you busy I'm sure.

Lexi looks a little sweetie Ben, she's obviously settling in very well.
love-041.gif

Yep, Lynn's just had her 'cute fix' for the day. Lexi has obviously had a very busy time and is worn out.

Great photos Ben. [emoji4]

I will spend all day telling myself i can't have a puppy now :icon-cry: looking forward to the cute tyrants escapades - give em hell Lexi

Thanks guys.

Things are going great!

The first night when we left her on her own in her area and she barked and howled and made the most incredibly horrific noise for about an hour!

It was really hard to ignore her and not go into her, but we stayed strong. :icon-cry:

When I got up the next morning I discovered her fast asleep on the couch. :icon-surprised:

Turns out she managed to squeeze through the widest gaps, either side of the stair gate.

So I've added more wood each side to cover the gaps and last night she remained in her area!

She howled and barked for a little bit last night but not as long as the first night, then she was silent all night. :icon-biggrin:

We've been determined to not give in and ever have her in our bed/room. I know a lot of dog owners let their dog(s) sleep in the bed with them but thats something were very against. So Lexi wont ever be allowed in any of the bedrooms.

Cant wait till shes a bit older and we can start taking her everywhere with us! I'm really looking forward to taking her camping.

Yeah it's worth persisting with ignoring the howling and anguish from puppy at night, jet did that for the first few nights. Dog becomes too spoilt when people let them sleep in room with them.

Ben, been following your thread for past year, great reading . Love lj, I'll be using it for inspiration when I manage to get a 70 myself. Looking forward to seeing your new truck (and new build?). As for the pup, if she hasn't settled yet try putting a mechanical alarm clock under her bedding. The ticking helps relax them, it reminds them of their mothers heartbeat. Best of luck with her

Thanks guys.

After the first 2 night of her barking hysterically, shes been fine and hasnt done it since.

It was hard ignoring her, but I'm glad we did. Shes quite happy now being left on her own at night or if we nip out in the day! :icon-biggrin:

I was hoping to get an update up but bloody Photobucket is down for maintenance again!

Hopefully get an update up tonight or tomorrow.

Lexi, Work & Me Becoming More Hippy Man!

Lexi!

These are the pieces I had to add to the stairgate to stop her escaping.

DSCN6095_zpsp18vipke.jpg

She seems to like playing in her bed but I've not actually seen her sleep in it yet, she prefers the cold tiles at the moment.

Work.

This is the sporting pavilion I've been working on which is being built for the council for next years Gold Coast Common Wealth Games.

DSCN6098_zpspki5tjb0.jpg

My main job has been helping them finish attaching sheets of ply wood to the underside of the roof.

DSCN6099_zpsfvsrc4yv.jpg

DSCN6100_zpssvjnvvdf.jpg

DSCN6101_zpsllesojws.jpg

Its right on the water where they are reclaiming part of the sea, Dubai style, to create a piece of artificial land where they are building a big swimming pool.

DSCN6102_zpsgwkrpfye.jpg

DSCN6103_zpsjyeycpne.jpg

Looks a bit better on a sunny day!

DSCN6104_zpsskglc0ro.jpg

DSCN6109_zpsl4azxw5p.jpg

DSCN6110_zpsbiupqtvf.jpg

I finished the roof.

DSCN6106_zpsz4qoon6v.jpg

DSCN6108_zpsos4kkiha.jpg

Its a shame that site is almost done as it was a nice place to work. I've met some great contacts though so hopefully I will get some more carpentry work soon.

I'm working in a factory Monday making stainless steel medical trolleys. The good thing about doing this agency work is that I only have to finish the day/shift I'm working and then I can tell them I'm going to a different job if I want. So if one of the agency's I'm registered with finds me some more high paid carpentry work I will be leaving the stainless factory and going back on site! :icon-smile:

Hippy!

Being on a building site proved very useful for getting building materials for my vegetable/fruit garden!

I was nearly out of pallet wood.

DSCN6084_zpsphpoznoq.jpg

Although I have gained a big pile of firewood for the next 4wd trip as pallet harvesting can be quite messy and wasteful.

DSCN6085_zpszr2xko1u.jpg

Anyway.......................

So I got some lengths of 3x2 and 4x2 that were destined for the skip.

DSCN6086_zpsgucvecdw.jpg

Cut them up with some fancy angles on the ends.

DSCN6087_zpsv17xcyln.jpg

And screwed them all together with some pallet wood to create a sort of horse shaped raised tomato planter.

DSCN6091_zpslzjnep8q.jpg

DSCN6092_zpsryqa5occ.jpg

My ultimate goal/dream is to be completely self sufficient with regards to fruit, vegetables, chicken and eggs! :icon-cool:

Another thing I'm aiming for is to have zero waste going to landfill!

We're very good at recycling in this country and up her in Queensland, like much of Australia we have a big 240 litre wheelie bin that we put all our recyclable items into such as glass, tin, alluminium, cardboard and certain plastics, that then gets emptied every 2 weeks. :icon-ugeek:

So I've been looking at what waste we can stop sending to landfill and a compost bin for all our vegetable peelings, banana skins, egg shells, tea bags etc. seemed a no brainer, especially as it will also provide me with good compost for my vegetable garden. :icon-cool:

I found in the skip at work a box that they sink into the ground with a man hole cover on the top and run all the services inside.

DSCN6112_zpslhf2rvpo.jpg

DSCN6113_zpsubnbszqv.jpg

They must have drilled the holes in the wrong place and that is why it was scrap.

DSCN6115_zpsxaxn96pz.jpg

I decided to cut out the section with 2 of the holes and add a door there to access the compost.

DSCN6116_zps76eq8grd.jpg

DSCN6117_zpskkxxvlxq.jpg

Drilled hundreds of random holes all over the box to ensure maximum airflow to speed up the decomposition process.

DSCN6118_zps0vzxscqx.jpg

DSCN6119_zpsoc9sxd4y.jpg

Cut some ply I also scavenged from the skip, on the saw horses I also managed to acquire at the end of the job.

DSCN6120_zpsno5azg2b.jpg

Drilled through the ply and through the box in the correct position and added some bolts through to give me some studs.

DSCN6121_zps9xdwhxf1.jpg

This bottom door/cover could then be bolted on with wing-nuts.

DSCN6122_zps12mchuor.jpg

Cut another piece of ply for the top and added some simple rope handles. Sat it up on some blocks of wood to help with airflow and thats my compost bin done!

DSCN6124_zpsyt7jcynz.jpg

I'm blown away by how well and how quickly stuff grows in this climate! Its much better growing conditions than Melbourne! :icon-surprised:

The strawberry plants were virtually dead for a year back in Melbourne despite me watering them regularly and sitting them in a sunny position.

Now there huge and are about to start producing fruit!

DSCN6127_zpswxlae13p.jpg

DSCN6128_zpshqfoavlx.jpg

I built a simple stand to raise the planter up which has the tomato plants in, up away from the puppy.

DSCN6129_zpstd2v8wzh.jpg

DSCN6130_zpsdeyomrfj.jpg

They too have shot up and are about to start producing fruit! I've got my first tomato on the vine. :icon-cool:

DSCN6134_zpsdwan2v7g.jpg

The tomato seeds that I saved from a shop bought tomato, germinated in my cupboard and then planted in pots have produced lots of little healthy tomato plants!

Some will be getting planted in my horse shaped planter and some will go in another one against the fence.

DSCN6125_zpsftjb66nw.jpg

DSCN6126_zpsamwyxais.jpg

DSCN6147_zpslwmssove.jpg

The seeds I saved from a shop bought capsicum/pepper, germinated in the cupboard and then planted in pots have also started growing into little plants.

DSCN6138_zpsigotinal.jpg

So my little deck based vegetable/fruit garden is going great!

DSCN6135_zpspttv6wwz.jpg

DSCN6136_zpshxjuvljo.jpg

Cant wait until we can buy some land and I can build my off grid eco house and start growing fruit and vegetables on a much larger scale and be as self sufficient and off grid as possible! :happy-hippy:

Oh almost forgot.........................

I've got 2 4wd trips coming up soon hopefully!!

One in the Northern New South Wales hinterland and one to LandCruiser mountain Park. 8-) :icon-twisted:

Last edited:
I thought that the landcruiser Park had been sold and only open to people who buy a Croft on the park?

I forgot to include the tree house pics in my update.

My boss sent me a couple of pics this week of the tree house now he has started fitting the spindles (branches) below all the handrails. :icon-cool:

Hes also fitted the gate I designed and built, in front of the firemans pole.

I'm not sure what the sign says on the other side but I think he said he was going to have a "Fireman Only" sign on it.
