LJ70 Build Thread!

Just had 3 pages of catch up on your thread Ben, glad you're rid of that idiot boss and even better news that you've got the installations job!

I recon you'll enjoy meeting the public in your new job.

Good to see LJ getting an airing and Lexi enjoying too! Keep posting matey :icon-cool:

Thanks Clive.

Sorry mate i just can't help thinking you could build a better truck than Toyota themselves if you put your mind to it .

Thanks.

I would like to put a modified 40 body on a 70 chassis one day, but I'd want to do it as a separate project. :icon-cool:

I will never sell LJ and seen as I've invested so much time and money into it, I want to restore it into a classic vehicle that would be used mainly on road and for light off road use.

As soon as kids come along LJ will be too small for camping trips, so the obvious answer is to get a duel cab 79 series ute for work and family camping trips and fit my fridge and all my camping gear in that. :icon-biggrin:

Have LJ as a daily drive with 5 seats again, no winch, no body lift, remove all the heavy bumpers and armor, re-fit an anti roll bar to make it more road friendly and put it back to almost standard with the exception of a snorkel, bigger tyres, roll cage/roll bar if I go down the soft top route and have it looking really smart with a nice paint job. :icon-cool:

Then build a highly modified Jimny for extreme off road use and competitions that can get trailed behind the 79.

I'm thinking stretched wheel base, bigger engine, maybe a Lexus V8, 60 series axles, hydro steer (maybe even 4 wheel hydro steer), Gigglepin winch, 37"+ tyres, full cage with lots of tube work. I want to build it be able to drive pretty much any track I can find! :icon-twisted:

Ah yes kids  perhaps your next project should be a daily driver for Bec

I'm thinking something like this

Because you don't do things by half measures

A lot have sadly been destroyed by young guys off road.

I found a degree of irony in this... look at what's happened to LJ over the years :p

One of the other problems is that a lot of the soft tops have lived along the beachside, and if they aren't beach cars, they've become shooting or mustering rigs.

I do see a few 70's around here - a very nice old BJ70 that only recently came off of split rims which seems to be one owner from new, and an LJ0 that works a bit harder and has the typical 1980's Land Cruiser rust repair to the roof gutters. There's also a pair of red 73's, which I'm pretty sure are one each of a FJ73 and a BJ73.

Wont be starting the new job this week now. :icon-cry:

Failed the drug test at the medical today.

I was very surprised and embarrassed!

Did the piss test twice and both times it came back positive for Opiates. :?

I eat 7-8 pieces of bread a day and the bread I buy from the bakers is covered in poppy seeds and that was enough to give me a false positive reading! :icon-mad

I'm detoxing now and going back for another medical and drug test on Friday, fingers crossed its all out of my system by then and I pass the test.

It does raise the question.....................

What if I was involved in an accident and a blood test revealed opiates in my system.

Might give the poppy bread up permanently. :shifty:

[emoji33][emoji33][emoji33] I love poppy seed bread…maybe I just found out why!!

So that's where your energy comes from . Be right back i'm off to Tesco's !

I've asked Lynn to get me some poppy seed bread. She said she hasn't seen it for a long time…they couldn't have banned it…could they?[emoji20] I haven't had it for ages.

Its great that this is finally happening in Australia! A lot of very sick adults and children are going to really benefit from now legally being able to use cannabis to treat them.

I'm hoping this will be an important first step towards ending the war on drugs, which has been a complete failure! :icon-smile:

The Job, Motorbike Riding, Lexi, The Garden & Tools.

I went back for the medical and drugs test yesterday and passed!

Which is great as I've been off work for over 2 weeks now!

So hopefully next week I can start the new job, find out Monday. :icon-cool:

Motorbike.

I've been going out for rides on the bike to keep myself busy.

Been going to my local legal tracks which are a 20 minute ride away.

IMG_9323_zps89eqeldk.jpg

IMG_9322_zpsdf91iw0q.jpg

The main track is a ridge track with working quarry's each side.

IMG_9324_zpsohigalla.jpg

So great views at times.

IMG_9325_zpsx4jkrgfu.jpg

IMG_9327_zps1zacdpob.jpg

Found a burnt out pit bike.

IMG_9326_zpsahoyvppp.jpg

It was only a cheap Chinese one, but I salvaged a few bits off it.

Got a brake lever and both foot pegs.

IMG_9343_zpskl5sekx1.jpg

I hoped one of the foot pegs could replace my broken one.

IMG_9344_zpsy05uyvxk.jpg

IMG_9345_zpsrahbfrj1.jpg

Close.

IMG_9346_zps0tdbsfkv.jpg

But sadly a bit different.

IMG_9347_zpsmsoyx4tp.jpg

Lexi.

Lexi graduated from puppy school this week!

She had great fun playing with the other border collie on the last night.

IMG_9349_zpsxvkffccl.jpg

IMG_9350_zpsvb2iapfu.jpg

Shes decided she loves digging!

So its a constant battle to keep an eye on her if shes in the garden on her own.

I caught her the other day and she was funny! She knew she had been naughty so she wouldnt look at me properly!

IMG_9368_zpsmdcbvcww.jpg

IMG_9363_zps2mqsmath.jpg

IMG_9358_zpsptxkaqts.jpg

IMG_9352_zpswkysxo7x.jpg

She decided to do some furniture re-arranging the other night and this is what I found in the morning!

IMG_9372_zpsuq9cgslw.jpg

IMG_9376_zpsvqkrmy5i.jpg

IMG_9394_zpscpt7j7oa.jpg

IMG_9395_zpsieiadxuk.jpg

She has a really tough life!

The Garden.

I needed more pot/bed space on the deck to plant more veggies.

So after giving it some thought I decided the best option would be to make some nice industrial hanging baskets out of the salvaged sinks I got from the casino hotel. :icon-cool:

First job was to remove the plug/waste fittings.

IMG_9400_zpsxdc5cm0f.jpg

Next I needed to add some chain.

As I may want to use them as sinks again one day I didnt want to drill holes in them to attach the chain, so instead decided to wrap chain around them and re-join the 2 ends back together to form a loop. :icon-ugeek:

IMG_9401_zpsxpckzpuf.jpg

Added some more chain, attached with zip ties.

IMG_9403_zps7gztv5sp.jpg

IMG_9402_zpsiztjx8h4.jpg

Hung them from a shovel between the 2 benches so I could fill them with potting mix and plant some seeds.

IMG_9404_zpssy6sgcbw.jpg

IMG_9405_zpshrayap1w.jpg

Planted spinach in the top one, the bottom one I've left empty for now.

IMG_9406_zps4fq3qgo1.jpg

And hung it on the deck.

IMG_9408_zpsshxkljjr.jpg

IMG_9407_zps9edeyyj4.jpg

IMG_9409_zpsnbjjgnq5.jpg

The rest of the plants are continuing to be fruitful!

The tomatoes are continuing to be productive.

IMG_9338_zpsccup0wpi.jpg

IMG_9342_zpsxw3joawu.jpg

As are the strawberry plants.

IMG_9339_zps2zh2qmo8.jpg

IMG_9341_zpsg5g8owxs.jpg

Our first capsicum decided it was ready and jumped off during some high winds we had.

IMG_9431_zpskbsce9sa.jpg

And the baby carrots are almost ready!

IMG_9432_zpsbbyzsonx.jpg

Tools.

I did some work in the garage.

I decided to change the last of the plugs on my tools from UK plugs to Aussie ones.

Picked up some plugs.

IMG_9378_zpsbmm6c1ro.jpg

And some new twin core for my heat gun.

IMG_9379_zps0hzwpl9w.jpg

Both my Black & Decker heat gun and bench grinder must be approaching 30 years old as there both good solid, well built, made in England ones, rather than all the made in China stuff they sell now days! :icon-ugeek:

IMG_9381_zpsubpwjwjn.jpg

The cord was looking slightly worse for wear on the heat gun hence why I decided to replace it.

IMG_9380_zpsv5xg5gvr.jpg

Going through all my tool cupboards I found a few other items still with UK plugs.

IMG_9382_zpsd6jpllfm.jpg

I've come to the conclusion that the Aussie plug is a much better design than the UK plug!

The only downside to them is the flimsy pins which if they were the same thickness as the UK ones would be much better as they do bend very easily.

IMG_9387_zpsgeruhyvc.jpg

IMG_9388_zpsq60xrvk6.jpg

Not only are the Aussie ones much easier to wire up and much less fiddly than the UK ones.

I love how the wires lock in in such a way as that if you pull the plug out of the wall by the wire or dangle a tool by the lead to lower it to the ground from a ladder etc. With the Aussie one your not pulling the wires out of the terminals like you are with the UK ones.

IMG_9383_zpsnfztatsy.jpg

IMG_9384_zpswyaqjvtt.jpg

IMG_9385_zpslmbeypep.jpg

IMG_9386_zpstoxxr42i.jpg

The tools didnt take long to change the plugs on and then they could all be put away.

IMG_9389_zpspyfbyab5.jpg

I went for a 4 meter cord on the heat gun as it will make it much easier when I'm shrinking heat shrink with it when doing automotive electrics inside vehicles, as thats all I really use it for at the moment.

IMG_9390_zpsszibgssg.jpg

I picked up an electric die grinder ridiculously cheap off Gumtree!

The guy selling it didnt really know what it was so had listed it as "hand grinding tool". So not many people had spotted it! :icon-biggrin:

My air one works OK but even with a 50 litre tank on my compressor I can only run it flat out for about 30 seconds before the tank is empty.

This will be much better! :icon-cool:

IMG_9398_zpslacsufag.jpg

IMG_9399_zpsdnq4ohfu.jpg

I did a little woodwork job.

It all started when I acquired 2 off cuts from a laminated, structural beam I fitted a few months ago and was wondering what to do with the useful looking off cuts which are laminated strips of Tassie oak.

Then I remembered I no longer had a decent, big, wooden mallet as I broke mine when I foolishly used it to bed slabs down with when I built my parents a big patio a few years ago.

I still had a small wooden mallet which I used as a guide and just scaled up from that.

IMG_9410_zpslmabcypw.jpg

IMG_9412_zpswgb5xruw.jpg

So the nice big chunk of timber.

IMG_9413_zpsy0tk0na7.jpg

Cut a section out for the mallet head.

IMG_9414_zpsnvtrt5zo.jpg

IMG_9415_zpsznsaeixu.jpg

Machined a handle out of some other hardwood.

IMG_9417_zps16emiwsl.jpg

IMG_9418_zpsikcoqxjs.jpg

Marked, drilled and then cleaned up with a chisel, the tapered mortise joint.

IMG_9419_zpstztvjqzg.jpg

IMG_9420_zpsvcd69m00.jpg

The handle could then be hammered through the head.

IMG_9422_zpshagucg5e.jpg

IMG_9423_zpsmhzyd1ct.jpg

IMG_9426_zpsdxcgdh9j.jpg

IMG_9427_zpsiotvdnw3.jpg

That will now live in the carpentry drawer in the wood working bench.

IMG_9428_zpstgyp8ceb.jpg

IMG_9429_zpsgtv5zcwa.jpg

When we eventually get our dream piece of land and build I'm going to have an awesome woodworking workshop next to my main automotive/metal workshop! :icon-cool:

But first I need to crack on with the new job and get our saving account built back up so we can put a deposit down on a house next year and then we can finally start renovating and flipping houses! :icon-biggrin:

Hi Ben, if you ever need to get your tools test and tagged to work on site you'll have to do away with the white plug tops and use clear. It's the law now for all replacements to be see through. It's silly but as a test and tagger I'd have to fail it.

Thanks Ash, I didn't know that.

Thankfully with my new job I dont have to supply any tools, they provide everything!

Just been in and filled in some paper work for them, ready for my start next week.

The boss told me they are still waiting for Toyota to deliver the brand new van they have ordered for me! :icon-cool:

So were going to be a 3 Toyota household! :icon-biggrin:

I'm thinking if we get Bec a bigger car, maybe a Prado, we could reduce the fleet and get rid of the Astra and her Yaris.

She did have her heart set on an FJ Cruiser but after seeing them in the Toyota dealership she has changed her mind. I also wasnt keen on getting a petrol 4WD of that size and obviously they dont make them in diesel.

What sort of range do you get out of a tank?

Obviously fuel is ridiculously cheap in this great country compared to the UK, so I never worry about the cost of fuel but on big 4wd trips fuel range can be poor on petrols compared to diesels.

My vote Ben
Turbo 100 series Sahara for a family wagon but there not great 12 to the 100 hwy and 14 to 15 city depending on how heavy the foot is.

Like the new intro Ben (I'm guessing it's new, not noticed it before) and glad you've finally got yourself clear for some routine work.

About 900 - 1000km, usually closer to 1000km, with the standard tank. This is for my normal driving including commuting.
