MOT - Help needed.

Hello Lovely Landcruiser Lovers

Please can anyone help me or point me in the right direction as Snow White Series 80 failed her MOT today on the following:

2 x Rear Shock Absorbers - urgently needed
Drivers Electric Front seat (grey leather) - the screw thread on the left-hand side is stripped and I either need new parts, motor, or chair. I did email Karl a while ago but didn't get a response.
ABS light on
Airbag light on

Also not a MOT fail but also AirCon not working receiver/driver needed (I am afraid I glazed over when my mechanic started talking techy to me )

Hi Caron, good to chat to you a while back regarding the dog guard which I have a plan to get to you.

Regarding the shock absorbers I'd get a price from Simon Halton for genuine ones, they're not difficult to fit for any mechanic and not dear.

ABS light needs someone who knows his way around older Toyotas and their quirks, as with the airbag light, More often than not the sensors just need taking out and checking for damage/ lack of magnitism. Its usually the clockspring in the steering wheel or the module which in front of the gearlever console which is the culprit for the air bag light.

Usually the issue with the front seat is a plastic bobbin pops out which is situated under the left front, this happened to me recently where the seat would go forward but not back. Found the bobbin on the floor and popped it back and the seat goes both ways now.

Rear Shocks are not expensive, If you just go for Budget ones to get you back on the road again, But i guess there is the fitting if its not a job you can do yourself. ABS Can be a head scratcher, (Many things can put the ABS light on)...... Same with the Airbag light,..... I know this isnt very helpful..... Air con could be just a re gas, But i doubt it, Condenser/ air con Pipes corroded etc etc..... What model 80 is it?

I know the Cruiser, it was me ( and Al) who discovered it all those years ago. Its a beauty but getting on in years as are the rest.
If its the original drier/condenser it will be toast now,

Caron the seat, as Andy has said, can be the little nylon end cap which carries the small dia cross shaft for the winding mech. It might be a case of pushing it back in place. Unfortunately if the the seat has be moved in that state the nylon cog might have stripped. You can buy replacement brass ones now on ebay. Not an overly complicated job but the seat needs to come out and be turned upside to work on.
The rears shocks could be sourced from a company Milners.
As someone has said, the ABS can be a pig to sort. I guess it is nice to have ABS but the early 80 series were not fitted with it. I have not fiddled with the ABS on an 80 but on others the first port of call will be down in the wheel area with sensors. Apparently ABS can be upset by brake fluid with a high moisture content.

On the seat front Caron, I know that Olazz repaired his only this month. He had to get the bits from the US. Now he's away in SA at present but there are ways to get to him if we need to.

Something I have come across re the ABS, if the sensors are too near or to far from the tone ring they can trigger the light, does the light go out if you start the engine but do not move the car, and then comes on a few yards down the road?

If it does then more than likely a wheel sensor has an issue, you would need to jack up the wheels and spin them independently and read off the resistance with a DMM, also the bush that the front CV runs in wears oval and can trigger the ABS as the tone ring moves opening and closing the gap between itself and the sensor. Removing the sensors and cleaning off any grease which in itself does not bother them, but other debris from an old CV that has worn to excess will leave fragments stuck to the magnets in the sensor.

First of all see if you can find the white nylon end cap and re attach it before you look to buy anything.

Did the ABS and airbag lights come on at the same time ?
Did the battery go flat and was it jump started after several attempts of "click click" from the starter ?
There are flash codes for ABS I believe and poss also airbag which might point you in the right direction.....they could just need clearing after a flat battery caused ECU's to see low voltage or something.
I have some "new" take off 100 series rear shocks that will fit and are a bit of an upgrade as they have a better lower bush than 80 ones . ( shocks have been in shed for years and were taken off delivery mileage 100's that were then fitted with armour and sent to warm sandy places )

Got my seat parts here seat parts — Gamiviti - [Leaving Land Cruiser Club]. Easy to fit and seem to last shifting my body back and forth.

Do the 80 have a seat positioning sensor....... Knackered seat / Airbag light..... Putting 2 and 2 together....... It happened on my 120, Wire got damaged under the seat, Hence the Airbag light.....
