Hey all I'm a new member. I'm addicted to toyotas and land cruisers

The rear pinion seal was leaking on my 60. I got the new seal and my buddy replaced it. He put the pinion nut back on with an impact. He's built hundreds of rear ends and has never had any issues.
My question is, there is no longer a light clunk when I move in reverse. Which is a plus. Now when sitting at a stop light, it doesn't roll like it used to. Will this be an issue and wear out the gears? Or will it be ok? It drives fine and makes zero noise.

I know they are supposed to be torqued 170 to 300. I'm pretty sure an impact will not go beyond 300 ftlbs

I don't know for sure, but IIRC other posts on this, there's a collapsible collar or spacer to protect against over-tightening.

You should check with a specialist, but if a tight pinion is stopping the truck from rolling freely, then IMO something's gonna give up and break pretty soon.

I always mark the nut and shaft location to make sure it all goes back together the same as when removed, you may get away with it being a bit tighter due to some wear in the bearings but ideally it is best to get it set with a new washer if you are not sure.

Lastly check if the diff is getting hot as this will give you a guide to what happening.

How hot is normal? I never checked it before and I checked it yesterday after a short drive and it was warm to the touch. Unfortunately we used a new nut that came in the package I purchased from SOR.

They always get warm-to-hot but you should be able to hold it with the front face of your hand.

If it's too hot to hold, then I would think something's generating too much friction in there.
