Tested out the landcruiser compatibility of the GoPro HD Hero. Note the 720p setting below, which still doesn't do the original source justice:

Here's me holding it - case still attached to the grill of the white truck (credit to Trevor for the photo):
Things to note:
Proprietary battery power - must be charged by USB (works with the car ciggy to usb adapters)
Case good for 60m underwater apparently
Lasts for about 3 hours of continuous shooting in highest res - excellent quality and detail
Takes up to a 32GB SD card
Has many types of mount available: http://www.goprocamera.com/pdfcatalog/
Can also take pictures every x seconds instead of video for timelapse (but you need to edit the photos into a video yourself)
Can be a faff to use with the two button interface "is it on?" and you have to be facing it to see what mode it's in.
Very wide angle lens - the action needs to be near you not in the distance for max effect
You can pull the video as files from the card - no special software needed
For a camera that you switch on and leave recording it's great, but the interface really isn't for for trying to be spontaneous and film things. Get a proper video camera for that.
