Petrol/Diesel autobox compatibility

I've often wondered what the difference is, if any between the petrol autobox and the one in the diesel 80's ( the later 3spd + overdrive), and if they are interchangeable without any noticeable differences.
I've no problems with mine at the moment just thinking ahead.

Due to the power band difference I would have thought the gearing between diesel and petrol versions would be different? This is based on other vehicle models in the past and not a 80 LC experience.
