Ok so my HZJ105’s original 2004 1HZ engine has been replaced by a new 1HZ engine from a HZJ79 which was manufactured around 2014 so I’m told.

With the new Engine came the new fuel pump:

I believe the original fuel pump had a rev counter sensor but the new pump doesn’t.

The rev counter does not currently work and I want to get it sorted. So any help or advice as to what the best plan is to fit a sensor be it on the pump or a crank position sensor or whatever is required would be very gratefully received.

I have no idea about your engine but my boats rev counter is wired direct to alternator , no ecu on boat though .

If you look at adding a marine rev counter they are all generic and the alternator obviously turns with the crank , I can't remember exactly but it as something like alternator to ignition to gauge to alternator so you might be able to piggyback on existing wiring

Thanks @Shayne

As a last resort I will replace the rev counter with an aftermarket unit and an alternator pick up may well be fine for that.

My first engines fuel pump had a separate rpm pick up on the fuel pump.
The new engines fuel pump doesn’t have a separate rpm sensor so I believe the ECU would use the crankshaft position sensor to control the fuel pump and supply a signal to the rev counter.

Now need to see if I have the ECU for the old engine or the new one.

If the old one I may be able to splice in to pick up the signal from the ECU.

Don’t have all this aggro on the 60!

The wiring diagram for the HZ 105 looks like the emission control ECU is connected to the RPM sensor, and that ECU feeds the dash tacho signal. If the 79 is configured differently you might have other electrical work to do to be able to use the 79 ECU. Are the emission controls different between the two engines as well? I don't have a wiring diagram for a 79 to compare.

Thanks @Jon Wildsmith

Yes this is what I’m hoping - that I can jump the signal from ECU to the rev counter.

Just received some manuals which may help. But as per you I don’t have a HZJ79 manual so if plan A doesn’t work it may get more tricky.
