Some rusty spots in the back?

Hello! Was doing some maintenance on the underside for rust prevention, and then I noticed at the back wheel, that the water and dirt will be thrown up in the back fenders (if I'm right). So I was shocked for what I saw. Didn't think it would be this bad.

Will be putting some rust converter on it but these are hard to reach spaces.

I've always asked myself, why didn't they cover it up with some plastic sheeting? Like the inside of the fenders.
Anyone tried to make something like that?

A common dirt/rust trap on the 80 series also. I'd jet wash it, let it dry than brush or spray it with Aquasteel which can either be left unpainted or topped off with just about anything.
I extended the rear mudflaps upwards inside the wheelarch with some heavy rubber sheet which helps stop muck accumulating

Wash it? Looks like a hard place to wash, but that will be better than a steel brush i guess.

Such a stupid spot to leave it open like that. Been thinking how I could cover it up but it'll be difficult.

That's not bad for a 90 series. These are old trucks now, and yes it's an exposed area. It depends on mileage and exposure to the elements etc.. but I had to replace my diesel filler pipe years ago due to rust. Yours looks like it might go porous soon. It's is the Achilles heel of the Toyota..

I have no idea, first I've seen of it. But I didn't expect it, no one does I guess!
Has done 215k miles so it's normal I guess.

Yeah the fuel filler pipe has been one my watchlist for a while! Have taken big chunks of rust of the pipe. Never looked at the surrounding areas of the pipe.

Talking of fuel filler pipes, I had to change it on my 80 series after i pin holed behind the centre bracket mounting it to the body. The rest of the pipe looked solid.

This was my old fuel filler pipe and area around it. Pretty ugly but it was all still solid, so I replaced it in time and repaired it.

Some Brunox (rust converter) and Zinc spray later and it's contained. After that I covered it with bitumen paint, the only thing that I find that actually sticks and holds for a long time? Don't really like using it because it's not fun to work with and work on but... if it works it works. Forgot to take a picture with the net fuel filler pipe, whoops.

Also jerryrigged a rubber slab that covers the hole from the wheel tub to the back lights.

Nice job there, should help keep it solid for a good few more years!

well done taking care of it. chasing rust is never fun and slightly stressful...
I have been very happy in the last few years using Lanoguard initially and now switching to Buzzweld chassis guard. they need re applying but they seem to work very well. the buzzweld one particularly and is really cheap and easy to apply

I've also sprayed the underside of the vehicle with lanoguard in november!
As much rust prevention as I can fit

it works well, my thinking is that the undercoat products are brilliant if you own a new vehicle and protect it from new but the lanolin based ones do a better job when you are taking care of a vehicle that does have some surface rust. try Buzzweld next time, about 1/2 to 1/3 of the price of lanoguard and cures less tacky. I found that lanoguard was absorbing sand and dirt. from what I can tell buzzweld stuff is a mix of lanolin and linseed oil so it polimerizes quite hard but still wicks in the rusty bits well

Will do next time!
Indeed took a long time to cure, but it was the only one (that I knew of) that was clear, and I liked that. I don't want to be covering up all of the spots. The previous owner treated the underside with a bitumen layer 2 times. Its good but it hides everything.

The sad thing with lanoguard was the price and that the large pack with the 360 lance wasn't available for a long time (and still is I think).
