what size are they? 15/16" 7J?

They are 16", 5.5" wide. they probably would have had 750.16 tyres fitted originally. The 5.5" is measured from the inside part of the rim.

ok probably a touch too narrow for 285's I'm in bristol.

Yep miles too narrow for 285's, I guess you need 8"rims for those.
I come to Bristol every couple of months as my sister lives there.
