Hi Chaps
I need some help with some warning lights that flash up on my dash.

The battery light, red light next to green turbo light, low water and the handbrake light all flash on at the same time. Now it did this the same time i had a rattle on my exhaust which my wife said must be to do with the same thing which i then told her she was talking crap and laughed at her for even suggesting that.

So i took the dash pod out and replaced all warning bulbs as i was there any way and was looking for a oil warning light( which i dont have???). all plugs were very nice and tight checked loom for markes and breaks nothing put back together still the same. checked the plug on the back of the altenator fine.

so bit Pi££ed off asd couldnt find anything so time to fix the rattle. new mount needed as the old bolts had rusted off.

next day No flashing lights??? wife was right doesnt make and sence so its been fine now for a few months. yesterday driving in the rain lights flashed again and stopped. then did a couple of lanes on the way home as you do pretty bumpy and very wet i suppose 6" deep but for long periods and they were then flashing all over the place.

today nothing all fine.

Can anybody suggest where eles i should look as i dont want to take the dash out again for no reason.

Also does any body else know why mine doesnt have a oil warning light fitted to it. no hole in side the dash for it. I do have the oild pressure gauge but thats crap anyway. its a 91 diesel.

thanks

It could be the alternator?

I haven't seen it personally but have read that it's the general Toyota warning alert for a failing alternator ... would also explain the intermittent nature

Interesting grant will see what sort of voltage i am getting out of it. would also explain why it was worse with all the water yesterday. i couldnt think why they would all be related. the volt meter on board is fine and doesnt move when the warning lights come on though.

My 92 80 used to do exactly the same.

It turned out to be the wire/loom and plug that comes out of the back of the alternator.

The first time I 'fixed it' I just cleaned the plug and 'pinched' the female spades in the multi plug a little to grip the male ends better. This lasted for a few months but the problem returned again.

The second time I fixed it I decided to cable tie the wires/loom to something more solid as it was the cable vibrating that was causing the issue. That was quite some time ago now and the problem has never appeared since.

Give it a go, a simple fix and costs nothing

thanks chaps i will have a look as soon as its dry enough. bloody rain.

Stumog I had exactly this on my 80. I had also realised that at the same time my rear wiper had packed up. Turned out to be a poor connector in the rear tailgate frame. So check all your controls and if one does not work check it's connections. Check the battery earths and 2 x engine block earths. Nothing wrong with the instrument panel lights. May be failing alternator. They are easy to take apart so check there is plenty of life left in the brushes. The rear alternator plug should be cleaned and connectors squeezed together so they grip the pins and greased on pushing back in.

thanks frank i am very lucky everything works on my 80 apart from the headlight adjuster switch. i will have a look at the earths and the plug again also cable tie everything to death. I have lots of them any way.

Your problem may be a poor earth around the headlight adjuster motors then! There are earth leads in that area so check their condition. I never thought that a connector in my upper tailgate would cause havoc with my instrument panel lights, voltmeter and even the alarm!

not sure? when i go to adjust the headlights they just shut off until they are back in the original place. i thought this would be the switch so didnt put them together. I have to take the front off it soon to fit my winch so will have a look then.

Hi chaps
Just to let you know i did check the alt plug last night and bent the tabs in, cable tied the cables to each other and the steering box pipe and no flashes this morning.
thanks for all your help

Hi Danny,
Do you still have problems with your ignition lights?
For over a year a selection of my ignition lights would flash or stay on when the revs were around 2,000 - my cruising speed! I followed all the good advice on this forum, got a Landcruiser specialist to look at it but no joy. Last year I drove from the UK to Morocco, back to Spain and on to Greece - flashing all the way. It was driving me mad. Then one morning in Greece the cruiser would not start! Just got a clicking noise. This was a major surprise as it normally started instantly . I checked everything and became convinced the problem was a faulty battery. They were both showing as 12.8V under no load but I suspected that at least one had a fault whereby it could not deliver a heavy load (24 volt start). I managed to get a local auto-electrician to come out to me. He spoke no English so my Greek was sorely stretched. Anyway after one turn of the key he said it was a bad battery. He pulled out a device which tested a battery by measuring its voltage under heavy discharge and soon fingered the faulty one. A quick jump start and I followed him back to his garage. Ten minutes later I left with a new battery and a lot less Euros that I arrived with. And... You guessed it no flashing lights! I assume that battery had an internal fault that was causing my problem. I am sure it was not the leads as they had been removed and cleaned several times as part of my long investigation. 8,000 miles and 6 months later my ignition lights are still behaving themselves. Good luck.
