Winch costs

Varies hugely on the rating of the winch , the manufacturer of the winch.... steel or synthetic rope... same for the winch mount.....
I would say £1000 - £2000
Make sure you fit a high quality battery isolator

Winch Max seem to do good quality winches at a decent price have used mine for bringing tree trunks uphill and other abusive situations had it since before covid and I like it says 14000lbs on the label and worth it

Yep, have one too and it always works, they do seem good for the money.

Much depends on what your intended use is TBH .....
Occasional self recovery etc where you're not doing deep water crossings and driving in constant wet muddy conditions then Winch Max or Rhino are absolutely fine ....
If you intend a lot of use and adverse conditions then check the IP rating of the winch .... You need IP68 and that always comes at cost . Most of the cheaper winches will also benefit from junking the original supplied cables and going up a size and soldering the connectors not just relying on crimps... Keep cable runs as short as possible , tucked up out the way and protect the cables in some convoluted trunking . As with all things the devil is in the detail and doing it right first time always pays .
The Ozzies have the best selection of winches and it's worth looking at some of their install videos for tips and advice ...... dash mounted rocker switches are good ideas .
I'm not sure with the cheaper UK spec winches how many options of frequency are offered for wireless remotes... it might prove an issue if the guy next to you is by chance on the same frequency and uses his remote.... ( this may be impossible ...I'm not sure )
Same with your winch mount .... not all are equal.... take some time and care fitting it .

Synthetic is the way to go ... lighter , safer as if it breaks it more or less drops to the floor .... and nicer to handle ...spool it out and give it a wash occasionally in a bucket of water and it will last for years . You can also carry an extension rope of synthetic with no weight penalty . Also you can use soft shackles and alloy winch accessories like recovery rings instead of heavy snatch blocks
Cons for synthetic ? only one as far as I'm concerned .... Cost ... it's more expensive

Many thanks for your comprehensive reply!
I’m looking at occasional self-recovery. Fitting is beyond my skill set so I’ll be shopping around for quotes.

One thing to note with winches is to routinely check they still work - especially if you are installing a cheaper one that isn't IP rated. You don't want to find out it doesn't work when you are in a recovery situation.

+1 for synthetic. Well worth the cost.
