Just noting the stone chips rust on my shocks I was actually idle browsing for rubber paint ,(hard paint means brittle which chips) , obviously I knew about shrink wrap for wiring but it never occurred you can get it in much larger sizes .
Yeah i've never been a big fan of powder coat its great while it lasts same as the old hammerite but any rust under it and you will never know until it becomes severe enough to break the coating .
I have Zinga in the shed (paint on I don't rate the aerosol highly) so i was just wondering what might prolong the finish some .
If I was going to use heat shrink for that I would want the HD glue backed stuff which bonds to the item you're covering and forms a seal. The non glued type is not water proof and will just hold in moisture when it gets in IMO.
I painted my new shocks with engine enamel before I fitted them a few years ago and they're still rust free.
Powder coating is fine if done correctly. I've had a few bike bits done recently by a local company. They are media blasted first to remove any corrosion and/or previous coating and to provide a suitable surface for the PC to bond to.
Edd China did a video on his Youtube channel recently repairing a classic RR chassis. The whole bare chassis was cleaned and then dipped in rust remover to remove ALL rust inside and out. Any welding repairs were than done followed by hot dip galvanising and finally an epoxy coat. Short of actually making the chassis out of stainless steel, that's about as good as it gets. Time consuming and very expensive though.
"Stone Chip" is probo the best. Used on sills before painting the top coat. Even new cars have it. You will need a compressor etc though. I used it on my railing posts before they went into wet concrete 30 years ago. Still rubbery and no rust creeping up from the ground.
