Not many shavings on drain plug and none in oil
axle shafts in good condition.
Pulled rear diff and looks in good shape (at least from what I can see) and no looseness
Appears to be grinding near pinion side
Will try and take apart tomorrow
Presume I'll need new crush sleeve and likely a bearing...
thats what I was thinking but good to be sure
I'll be checking for a 4x4 diff mechanic if my local guy isn't up to it. As likely it will be sitting around for awhile - depending on whats broken and needs replacing.
Still scratching my head on why its happened as not been doing any wheeling ...
1997 USA 1fzfe 80 auto with 350K miles
Had a small noise (whine) from rear axle last few weeks so pulled the rear propshaft. With rear up on jacks would rear a small whine from rear diff but wouldn't tell if pinion area (had small leaking seal redone last year in Slovenia at Landcruiser shop)...

CVs with 'leak' (more goop than fluid) is a common issue. I've mine to redo again (oil seal on axle that goes), Check your diff breather is open and working

Went a few years back and Norway is spectacular. Had RTT and no issues finding spots but Finland/Sweden easier/better facilitated as others indicated
Beware the distances and weather conditions (winter/snow/ice). Didn't go all the way to North as for me wasn't worth the loooong drive
On a wee camping trip in Scotland (over from Ireland) and had a tyre pop the other day. Trying to get it fixed so have as spare.
However rest of tyres are 2nd hand and methinks safer to get a new set (of 5)

Most 80s (for overlanding) are way overweight (especially USA and some in Aussieland) but not an "issue" unless doing serious offroading. Better if can be under the limit and lighter is better

I've LPG on my 97 and once understood it works fine. Check you have LPG stations near you as they are declining in popularity (plenty on the continent)
I don't see any LPG "bits" on the engine picture so wondering what...
yes if starting battery #1 from #2 leisure battery but issue afaik lithium (and derivatives) aren't "good" in engine bay and not as a starter battery. Could be wrong
