Replaced engine oil and fitted an OEM Toyota oil filter, new sump plug. Been about 5100 miles since last oil and filter.
Fitted the Falken Wildpeak tyres.

something is putting it into limp mode. black smoke means to much fuel and not enough air so it is pointing to a fault with or around the turbo. if the vanes are sticky it can go into limp mode from overboost or underboost. i had that a lot on one of my VW Golf's with a variable vane turbo...

Cleaned the MAF - looks to me like it has never been cleaned. Fiddly to get out and one of the screws was pretty stuck. I shall report back.
Was a lot easier to get at and remove on my RAV4 that I did before the Landcruiser.
Just been to the pub. Drove it more briskly on the way. sat in the car park at the pub and the misfire was back when i tickled it up to 1400 rpm. ran the truck home through the hills and gave it some beans down the by pass. and at home in the drive way no misfire at 1400-1500 rpm. got to love...
went out this morning and gave the engine a good workout on long runs up the hills to get the egts up. holding it in lock up as long as i could on some hills and then running the truck foot down up to the red line through the box on other hills. 20 minutes of italian tune up later no misfire...

I chat with the local delivery drivers. The dpd driver cannot use the van heater in the cold weather as she cant complete her round if she does. local posties tell similar stories with their shite electric vehicles (their words).
Depending on how deep the scratches are - if it is just the clear coat then previously I have managed to remove a lot of scratches using some 2000 or 3000 grade wet and dry with soapy water and very light pressure. Take your time and finish off with some polish.
New number plated light fitted. had to redo an earth connection back there as well. The old fitting was amusing at best, loving the stuck on tin foil to get it through its mot.

last night i noticed the number plate light was out. took a look at it today and it is an aftermarket LED unit. have ordered replacement (and a spare) that should arrive tomorrow and will fit it then.

Truck is starting as it should now, every time. So it appears the poor earth, and the 2 inferior replacements were the culprits. i might keep my fingers crossed in my pocket for another few days!
I woke up in the night with the thought that i should make the earth for the EDU a lot more beefy. So made up one out of some cable from my heavy duty extension lead. Three core. The truck started immediately this morning at -3c. and again this evening having sat all day. it is -3c again...

the truck is now running.
leaving the batteries off for 45 mins whilst i cleaned up the brakes and handbrake on the Rav 4 made no difference. still would not start.

I moved the cruiser yesterday to do some work on the RAV. As always cracked with a flick of the key.
However, when i came to move it back later on it cranked for a while without firing - just like if an immobiliser was on.
I never use the large key fob and buttons to lock it, just the key.
So...
I'm going to have to work through the wiring and see if power is getting where it should. i noticed the rear locker red lamp on the dash was really dim while flashing, not sure if that gives me any clues at this point.
The last three i have changed on 80s have been straightforward. I will have another go later next week. got my multi meter back tonight which is a plus.
persuaded the old locker cover off and spent a little time with a soft brush. i think i can salvage the brushes from this one. i think the rest of the unit is past its use by date,
decided today would be a good day for swapping out the old difflock for the shiny new one.
took best part of 2 1/2 hours to get the old one out. seized bolts that i ground off (tight for space isnt it). then the aluminium plate was crumbling and stuck in places to the diff housing. so cleaned...
i ordered replacement front anti roll bar bushes from Amayama. As with the diff locker the delivery has got messed up. they got as far as clearing customs in the uk, and now they are in new york, usa. go figure.
