I met a man today filling his 100 diesel up and asked him if it was reliable. He said his company runs 4 of them and they run them up to 500,000 miles then sell them!

Frank

That will be a testament to thorough and regular servicing and of course being well driven. I wonder in what time scale they achieve that mileage?
Did'nt you ask him that Frank? if not why not?

Andy

The man was Gavin Bingham-Wells

"Grasshopper"
Horticultural Ltd
The Garden Machinery Specialists

They sell Hayter and Toro products and are based at;

Braintree Road
Chatham Green
Chelmsford Essex
CM3 3LD

He also has a V8 petrol 80 converted to gas.

Dear Andy
If you'd like to send me a list of questions to ask in future, just in case I've forgotten something :icon-biggrin:

Why did I know that was coming??:lol::lol:

Got to hand it to Frank, he's thorough!!

Regards Frank.

So what was the timescale to reach 500K miles, are they facelift models?

Andy

That is pretty impressive, especially considering a horticultural business is going to be doing a lot of towing as well. I have a friend here in Ireland that has a large breakers yard for commercial vehicles and they also do countrywide recovery. He also swears by them for reliability, the one he is driving at the moment has over 300k on it and is regularly used for long distance heavy towing. He bought it to replace an 80 series he had that had done much the same.

Andy I've just phoned him for a chat but he's on t'other line.

I'll let you know if he calls me back.

Frank

Andy, he's just called back

The 03/100 diesel he was in yesterday had 185,000 miles on it. They have just sold a similar 10 year old one with 510,000 miles. They have a V8 petrol/gas 100 which has 300,000 miles on it. They service themselves but usually only the oil and filter. However they do a lot of towing with the Ivor Williams triaxle trailers with a usually 2-3 tons laden weight so they are changing brake pads and discs quite frequently even though the trailer brakes are adjusted properly. They have always used Lancruisers. He said "well you wouldn't use a range Rover would you ?" On average it takes them 10 years to just go over the 500,000 miles then they sell them. They virtually never need any none consumable parts.

Frank

Well the 03 one has done the same as mime in the same time. If theirs runs as well as mine at the mileage then mine should be good for a long time. I wonder were their diesels auto or manual. Their 03 has some to do to average the same as the other one.

Sorry Frank but if it's an 03/100 isn't it 10 years old anyway??

There's hope for the rest of us yet - I'm on 167,000 on an '02 LPG/petrol
