I thought I would post something on one of these Prado sites I use so often for diagnosing/fixing problems.
I was driving the other day and the engine cut out, everything shut down including power steering and coasted to a stop, all warning lights on as happened when you stall.
Got towed to a carpark and tried to restart the thong for about 2 hours, thought it might have been fuel block or something. Turned over fine but just wouldn't start, had a really good battery luckily. Than after a very long time it started for a few seconds and then dies. This gave me hope and I fiddled with all the possible electrical connections as well. After maybe another 30 minutes it fired again, drove forward backwards, stopped and wouldn't start again. Played around with everything I could think of in engine bay and under steering wheel, all accessible wiring. Didn't start. Mate turned up to tow it and as he pulled in it started and actually kept running to my surprise. Replaced fuel filter and cleaned out a few sensors, but as it was now starting and running it was impossible to pinpoint anything. Got a bit bored today and decided to take out the ECU, a very easy job as it is just behind the glovebox (about 6 screws to remove). Opened it up, thanks to another thread I had come across about ECU's with leaking capacitors causing all sorts of strange problems. Low and behold there it was 2 x leaking capacitors. Have sent away to be repaired to a guy in Taupo who quoted $100-$400 depending on damage. Pretty sure this was the problem and sharing in the hope it might help someone else as this seems to be very hard to pinpoint. No test error codes etc etc.
