I'm about to have a "cat back" stainless exhaust fitted. For an extra £100 (ish) they will remove the internals of the cat, and fit a pipe straight through the empty body: for mot puropses it will look stock.

It's a 2003 D4D, 140k miles, running a lindop chip. I'm not looking for earth shattering performance, but cat removal gives more poke and better economy.

Has anyone removed the cat from their 120 series?

Apparently the downpipe from the turbo is a smaller diameter than the turbo output and restricts the exhaust flow. Better off getting a 3" system from the turbo back.
Have a word with Overland Cruisers. I had some work done there in June, Derusting, dinitrol etc. Apparently my middle box needed replacing at £270 or an old stock stainless system was available for £350. I took the latter route and the performance has been much improved.

Thanks.

There's a place local to me who fabricate exhausts, a cat back system using my old (but perfect) tail pipe is just under £300 fitted, so the price sounds good.

I'm just a bit wary of removing or destroying a good cat without good reason.

i removed the cat in my exhaust and rewelded the pipe
cutting the pipe at the top away from prying eyes

sounds better and revs more freely
performance and economy would be hard to determine
but it feels great dumping that POS out of the exhaust
an exhaust is meant to 'exhaust' not hinder
