Car sounds like shrieking demons

Hehe, that's the idea. But I'm having a pretty tough time getting a straight answer whether the injectors are available. A local parts shop said they could get the original ones for me next week potentially as their supplier was out of stock. I'm looking at 2 grand or so with all these little bits and pieces plus injectors. Hoping I do catch the problem somewhere. :)

I would start with the least expensive first, have you looked at partSouq for your injector parts ? Thats if there still available on there.

Funny enough I just found out about PartSouq 15 minutes before your post. Checked for my injectors there, out of stock. The local parts shop just gave me a quote of 290 per injector. I don't know if that is too expensive or the expected price. With that said, the fuel injection specialist had quoted me 240 for reconditioned ones so 290 doesn't sound that bad for new Denso injectors.

So before starting on anything at all, I've been trying to find out exactly where the squeal is coming from. The noise is not coming from belt/pulleys (although I do think one of the pulleys is worn). It seems to be coming from around the engine, one of the gaskets seems to be worn. When you stand facing the engine, the turbo pipe (I think that's what its called) going into the intercooler, the gasket on that seems to be the culprit. Would that make sense or am I just making assumptions that don't make sense?

Here's the image of where I could kind of hear the noise coming from.

I'll have to check tomorrow morning again to pinpoint it but just wanted to see if a worn/old gasket on that pipe could result in such an ungodly sound?

There is no risk and very easy to remove that. 4 bolts and it's free, the pipe has movement in it so you can inspect that easily.

I'd be surprised if it was this though

I remember my cousin here in Cyprus removed the intercooler on his 3lt hilux to cleanout the egr valve which has the same 1KD engine as the 120 , and he removed the 4 bolts where you think the noise is coming from instead of the top jubilee clip at the turbo lower down , well when he went to bolt it back because it was very tight when he was undoing the 4 bolts it wore out the aluminium treads and would not tighten up it hissed and leaked , he solved it by putting PTFE tape on the treads of the bolts , , but from then on he says he will always undo the jubilee clip instead of the 4 bolts on the intercooler I wonder if that is your problem and its caused from that by its previous owner or garage and the gasket is leaking air , also look lower down the pipe in case any of the two jubilee clips are loose . if so its a cheap fix if either end is loose or leaking ,

Thanks guys.

I'm going to do a bit more investigative work before taking the car apart. Should have a bit more time this weekend as well.

Ok...very strange. Started up the car again from cold. It started doing the noise again but the noise goes away when I hold the tail pipe.

Anyone know what that could be about? And why does the tail pipe sound like that?

Now that you have said that , if I were you just get under the car with the engine running and check that any of the heat shields are not loose and slightly touching the exhaust and vibrating as they can come loose and need a bigger washer for the nut to hold it in place .

Heh, I guess mine is a bit more dramatic and goes for the shrieking effect.

thanks guys. I’ll try that and report back :)

Entirely possible that a split hose could cause a shrieking noise, but honestly, I didn't really hear yours shrieking. Not sure if anyone has mantioned this yet, but get a wooden dowel or a long screwdriver and put it to your ear. Touch it around the engine and listen. If it's a pipe you probably won't hear it. If it's anything mechanical, you will hear it and you can use the rod to track it down a bit more. Anything like a pulley bearing will show up immediately as a sort of Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr noise.

I THINK I've found the culprit. As TonyCY11 said looks like a heat shield has come loose.

I guess I should now go find some giant washers as those big ones aren't enough any longer...

Either way, if this fixes the noise problem, I'm going to be a happy man.

I had a “shrieking” exhaust on my old LC Colorado once. It was the flexible joint that’s has two springs the bolts go through. New bolts, springs and gaskets fixed it.
Holding exhaust tip also stopped the noise

Hi Andy,

This morning confirmed that that is the exact problem I have along with the heat shield. Holding the heat shield up stopped the rattle, holding the exhaust pipe up where the joint is stopped the squeal.

Would you mind listing the exact parts required to fix it and if there’s anything i should be weary of?

Have similar on my Collie. Just changed the middle and rear sections with new gaskets and rubbers but kept the spring bolts. Have nipped them up again this morning so hopefully gets rid of 'that' awful squeal.
