I am constantly awed by what was achieved in a very short timescale as war became imminent. Rolls-Royce set up those multiple factories in only a couple of years (I believe there was a secret underground Merlin factory as well).

Today it would take longer than that just to hold a Public Enquiry into the proposed use of a site!

It was a time when decisions were made by Engineers instead of Accountants.

While R-R were doing this, the War Ministry was building Army Camps and Airfields all over the country and other factories were churning out military vehicles and weapons and doing R&R into new and advanced products.

Necessity is the mother of invention, but we seem to have lost the work ethic and the driving force that allowed all this to happen.
