Spammers - more done to try and reduce them

Had been having the same problems as Stu, not been able to log on to the LCC site for over a week!
But thanks @stumog and @Crispin ..... now back up and running!

I'm back too. Thank you crispin for sorting it. Had to speak to the wife the last night or two.Still was nice to sit and talk to each other for a change. Apparently she's been layed off from her job in Woolworths. Thanks Stu for passing on to Crispin too.

Yes, same, have had error 404 access denied for a few days. Seems good again now

I've also been locked out since Thursday, Safari on Iphone/Ipad/IMac and Google Chrome on W7 Laptop. Tried cache and history clearing and renewed IP address a few times but nothing worked but now back in. I could get to the home page but any further navigation got the "no permission" screen and an "Oops something went wrong" pop up when trying to log in. This is why I will NEVER connect my 80 to the internet!

This morning my Galaxy is back in. Thanks Crispin.

Bob.

Another step towards stopping these spammers -

I get a ton of spam email via the website - usual thing of people trying to sell their goods.
I've now created and turned on a feature (back end, so no one will really see it) which will add a permanent block on their IP address.

Next step is to add the suggestion mentioned here which would allow anyone to flag as spam and block that IP address.

The good part in all this - those IP addresses go into a pool of "known-bad" which is contributed to by thousands of other people so we all get to benefit. If your IP address is in the CrowdSec pool then you don't even get to see the site.

Small steps but getting there. :icon-biggrin:

@Crispin
Turn on Q&A CAPTCHA and create a carefully worded question that a spammer would struggle with.

Something like, "In the U.K. what colour traffic light comes after Red?" Then add amber or orange as the answers.
It will certainly reduce the numbers of spammers getting through

I used to have a question - "What's the second word in LandCruiser". It was amazing how many people did not get past that..... I did not think it would work but was amusing.

It would seem the last drips and drabs of spam are coming from real people pushing their own goods. Not had any in a while now which has made it through.
After blocking the main countries - China, Russia and a few smaller ones, it seems to have stopped. Which is nice.
The last ones sneaking through are from USA, Sweden, Germany etc which are actually VPNs so no option there really.

For new joiners on my site I always check the timezone of the device they register with, the location they claim to be in and the location determined by IP address.
If all 3 don't match then more often than not they are dodgy scally's up to no good.

Is that automated?
Cloudflare's Turnstile blocks more and smarter than a Captcha solution. I don't know all the inner workings, but I think it checks those three variables. And it's free.

One problem with (automatic) blocking of IPs, is that you can block out your patrons as well, as spammers often use the same services (ISPs, internet hotels) as the rest of us. I had my website blocked because some spammer had been on the same rented server space. But then again, better safe than sorry.

I'll take a look at that too. Thanks.

With the layers now in place, it seems to be fending off pretty well. It's "community driven" so has a well curated list of baddies which gets updated every 30 minutes.

You're right, there is risk of bad reputation ip being used by normal folk. Had a chap on Ireland last week were this happened. Is seldom though and easily rectified.

So got round to this now as there are still drips and draps of spammers coming through.

If a post is marked as spam twice in an hour, it will automatically block them too :)
