A landcruiser with a motor inside each wheel would make a serious off roader. No need for diffs or diff locks and independent power to each wheel.
It'll just sound wrong and won't be very popular in Saudi Arabia. Where hopefully Toyota will continue to supply proper fuel burning Cruisers that we can import when needed.
Wile they are at saving the planet they should make them to last and cut out all the tempting new body styles every 3 years making us all want the latest model and depleting the worlds resources.
Its good news really because "save the planet" is EU speak for "send money to Germany" so when the Japs start producing something twice as good for half the price it will all of a sudden become a universally unquestionably scientifically proven "fact" that fossil fuels are better for the G̶e̶r̶m̶a̶n̶ ̶e̶c̶o̶n̶o̶m̶y̶ planet .
+1.
Such a drive system would make the ultimate off roader as far as traction is concerned. As with all fully electric vehicles the limiting factor will be the batteries, especially as you have 4 motors drawing power. Most of the super sized mining vehicles use this setup but they have a diesel engine running a generator and, occasionally, an external power supply fed by catenary. It's only the battery tech which is holding back the rollout of such vehicles IMO.
TESLA have just announced that they are to produce a pick up truck, (slightly bigger than the F-150). Never knew the pick up truck market in the US was so profitable. Quite a contrast to us poor saps living in Europe, who are being forced to shun diesel and ditch the heavy vehicle.
