I have reluctantly decided now to get my engine re-built, she aint right :(
There is an old boy near me who is old school and i am sure he will do a proper job and give her the loving care she needs to make her better again.

While the engine is out i want to get everything else done:
Water pump
Engine mounts
Timing belt
Repair my EGR valve pipe

Is there anything i have missed or should do?

I thought about replacing the gearbox mount as i am getting a vibrating sound, but i don't know what it/they look like or where to get it from

sounds expensive, but at least once its done you should have a great engine. :)

i would definitely replace the front camshaft seal. i fitted a new cambelt on mine, then 2 days later i noticed the water pump was leaking.

so stripped it back down and fitted a new water pump. a few days later i noticed id got a slight oil leak, from the front camshaft seal.

so cambelt back off and new seal fitted, which fixed the oil leak.

Expensive, but i cant take the risk, off to Morocco next year, if the engine goes there i am stuffed :(

I was told about a year ago it needed an engine re-build, i had it looked at, we found the turbo was shot and the rocker box gasket was leaking badly, there was a fair bit of back pressure when you took the oil filler cap off.
We changed the Turbo and rocker gasket, all seemed to be well

I have just got a bigger caravan, towed it to the Berkshire 4x4 show, the engine was under alot of stress, now she miss fires under acceleration and puffs out blue smoke, i took the oil filler cap off, out came a mist of oil and it sprayed oil all over my arm :(

So i have decided for piece of mind to get it done.

As my old man said, no truck, no trip

Hi Jim, is your engine the 2.4TD? If so, have you considered this opportunity to upgrade to a 3.0TD like Ben is about to do?

P.S. Will we be seeing you at Peterbourgh?

Cheers.

Should be at Peterborough, i was going to take the caravan, that wont be possible now

I did think about the 3L engine, the only thing is i have the 2.4 lte engine, seem to have read somewhere that the electronics cause an issue.

There is also the initial outlay for the engine, i also don't have the time to strip and re-fit the engine myself, or the skills and tools

Its going in to Brian at engine solutions on Tuesday, he recons it will be off the road for about ten days, then i presume i have to run it in.

You may have to rough it in a tent!

As long as you've considered the 3litre engine. I just thought it might be preferable for the long motorway drives and mountainous roads that your likely to use the truck in. I think some of the 3litre engines have electronically controlled injector pumps, and some have manual pumps. I think there's more info on this in Ben's 70 series build thread.

Either way, good luck with the engine work, hopefully the truck will be fighting fit again real soon.

KZ-T engine is non electronic, and KZ-TE is electronic, fitted to the later series.

A KZ-TE engine requires several parts off of the KZ-t engine to fit and run proper.
Sump, oil cooler, pump,, and the dipstick is on the wrong side.

A man in the know has arrived, cheers Nivapilot.

Jim, with regards to your original question, if the engine is coming out for the work I'd be fitting a new clutch, replacing all the water hoses for genuine. I'd also be taking a very close look at all the ancillaries, assessing their condition and maybe having them rebuilt. I'd definitely take the opportunatiy to have the injector pump tested and recalibrated by a specialist, as that'll have a large impact on how the engine will perform. As well as the injectors.

Plus the radiator, anything of unknown vintage/condition that could cause you problems in the future, or damage the engine.

Many thanks,

I didn't think about the injectors, all the hoses were replaced when i got it, so should be in good condition, the radiator looks ok but i will inspect properly once the engine is out, fortunately no clutch as i have an Auto box

Well shes gone, missing her already

Phoned my engine man today, Milners have delivered my new water pump, engine mounts etc, he will start work on it on Monday.

I was hoping to get it back for the LRO show at Peterborough, don't think i will though :(

I will have to slum it in the Fiesta.

Don't think i will have a go at the off road course

Let me get this right, you were thinking of taking a Land-Cruiser to a Land-Rover show!

Wow.

Roger

I go to all the big ones, that's where all the overland/4x4 kit is.

Get some good deals, got a good deal on my suspension kit from TBR at Peterborough.

The Peterborough and Billing shows are massive, all the major players are there, at Billing you get the German and other foreign suppliers too.

I do get some funny looks sometimes though :?

I took my SJ Suzuki to a Land-Rover trial at Eastnor and one cryptic comment was---

"I see the barbecue has turned up".
