i spotted some diff oil tonight - front diff - and leaking at the end of the longer shaft where it meets the CV joint cup
is the seal a pig to change? whats involved? max ellery manual not much use

opened up fill plug on diff and oil came out, so level is ok at the moment

check it not just that the breather is blocked andy, given how many miles you have done there could be a fair bit of pressure built up in there if it is.

Suppose I could have saod did you hear any amount of air escape (pressure) when you removed the level plug ?

Breather is OK - I extended it before the trip
and no air escape last night when i opened up the filler bolt

Easy enough to do.
Drain diff.
Take off wheel, prise off the black dustcap over the front hub nut.
remove the split pin and lockwasher.
get a helper to push the brake while you undo the nut.
Undo the 4 bolts that secure the bottom balljoint to the lower arm
slide the hub off the driveshaft and move to one side with wire or similar.
pop the driveshaft out with a prybar (hardest part I found!)
Remove driveshaft and pull seal, I used a fencing pliers to remove it.

They are quite tight and mine were the old type seals with metal rim not the newer rubberised type.
Clean area and install new seal with appropriate sized tube to drive it in carefully.
Refit driveshaft with new circlips
slide hub back into place and secure with the 4 bolts.
refit hubnut with brake assistant and new split pin.
Refit dustcap and wheel
Fill diff with Oil.
Check for leaks.

thanks Bounder!
I have some fencing pliers just like them too!

So new seal and circlip(s) required? are the seals same part no on each side - do you have the part number(s) for seal and clip
looks like i will be phoning the dealer to get the parts

andy

Clips are the same, seals are different IIRC.
I can't check toyodiy Its blocked where I work...
Buy a couple of the clips, they are cheap and handy to have if you need to pull the DS at any point.
Those fence pliers are great things to have really useful tools!
Just a thought, that long pipe is really only an extension it bolts on and off , I have a feeling the diff seal may be gone and allowing oil to run down the extension because that extension is usually dry.
Let me check when I get home as to what the setup is.
I know when I put the replacement diff in mine I only did the diff seals not the extension shaft.

another question

there are 3 "snap rings" in the area around the oil seal

is this the one that needs replacing normally on a seal change - in this photo
part =- 43411C (90521-29002) snap ring for front drive inner shaft outer)

and part pic

the other snap rings are:
41304M snap ruing (for differential side gear shaft RH - inner and outer)
the outer one here seems to hold the bearing in place,
the inner one is part: 90520-39023

you can see these other 2 snap rings on Tonys pic here

I assume its the part 43411C (90521-29002) at top of page, that clips onto CV drive shaft i would need to replace? not the bearing ones.

I have been trying hard to remember what I did, considering I have taken that drive shaft out at least 3-4 times... I still can't remember

I know the little (43411c) one on the end of the shaft came with the part that I ordered as a replacement, so not sure you can get it sepparately. When I fixed the broken drive shaft the second time I did not replace the little ring as I did not have a replacement at the time... and I could not wait....

The other two and the seals I order sepparately. And yes I believe they are the same for both sides (seals and snap rings) as I ordered then for the first change, and then used them for the second time....

Check the bearing whilst you are there, and if ok you won't need to change the snap rings as there is no need to take them out. Just change the Seal.

Oh and if you need to take out the snap rings, make sure you have a reasonably sized snap ring pliers as the one I borrowed could not do the job..

As I was not re-using the seals I just butchered them with a screwdriver...... my second favourite tool after a hammer

HTH....

I ordered some snap rings from roughtrax for a hilux, which I am pretty sure will be the same and much cheaper than the dealers.
