Gearbox has actually broken... On a Landcruiser?

Hi all,

Just when I try and sell the Landcruiser the gearbox decides now is the best time to stop working.

The gearbox oil level is fine and doesn't sell or look burnt but in DRIVE it revs and moves forward very slowly and is slipping it has no torque. It will creep forward but not mount a curb for example, in either D or L (low) in both high and low ratio. Not sure if it matters but the centre diff lock works?

Although, REVERSE does work properly in both low and high ratio.

I have no idea how autoboxes work, I don't understand how forward gears don't work but reverse does.
What should I do next? Please help!

Thanks,

James

Have you tried it with the CDL in? As it might not be the box and might just be a CV.

Are you sure the level is fine did you check it with the engine running and been through the gears a few times. :?:

Yes I have tried the CDL and it doesn't seem to make a difference. Reverse works perfectly though.
I have tried the level after cycling through the gears and have the car running for 20 minutes.

Thanks for any help guys!

People with more of a idea than me will come along. But it will probly be the box. The valves no dout. Thought reverse and forward were running off one vave but maybe not. Good look. Ill watch the post.

I seem to think you had problems with the gearbox before but they went away? Or maybe I'm thinking of someone else but if it was yours then knowing the previous symptoms may help work out what's wrong now but there's a good chance you have failed clutches.

Have you tried it with the gear selector in L rather than D?
If you have a 2nd start button have you tried using that?

I have tried using the 2nd start button and no it won't play ball even after selecting reverse as I tried that after finding that thread last night.

I did do some searching on here and a google search but didn't find too much information on these gearboxes breaking.
I did have a problem a while ago where under hard acceleration or going up steep hills in high ratio where it would judder and what felt like the entire cabin of the car bounce around fairly violently but as you select low ratio for the hills it went out. I check the fluid level and it was a tad high so I sucked some of it out and the problem went away or at least I thought so as I very seldom accelerate hard or drive over any difficult terrain in anything other than low ratio.

I haven't been using the 80 recently but I did use it in the snow and used it to tow a few cars which may have something to do with it?

Any ideas on how much a gearbox will cost, I think I am going to have to take it to a local gearbox specialist http://www.hardyengineering.co.uk/ as they seem to be rather good. Unless you guys have got any more tests I can do and try and narrow down the search.

The only other information I can give you is that it went from running perfectly to like it is now where it will barely move forward in about 2-3 miles.

I need to get it sorted asap so if anyone knows where I can find a gearbox do let me know!

I remember your juddering now and I think at the time I will have suggested the throttle position sensor cable had broken or was binding? Using it like that will have burnt out the clutches unfortunately and need a rebuilt or 2nd hand box. I think your petrol cruiser has an A343F not the A442F that is fitted to the diesels.

Oh bother.
How much is a gearbox going to cost, I can't find any for sale anywhere?
Does anyone have any experiences with replacing the clutches on this gearbox?

Box rebuild is going to cost you around £2000 - £2500, sorry not what you wanted to hear, how about Karl or Steff, they may have second hand one.

I have a 100 series diesel box.Out of a auto. Jon will know the differences as i dont.Would the 100 box be the same as the late 80 series? My 100 was right on the changeover.

That would be the best i could do unless its the same as the 80series with the overdrive.

The second gear button is baffleing me as i thought they were only on the 100 series

The petrol 80's got a 2nd start, different gearbox to a 100.

Ouch... Don't think I'll be getting the gearbox rebuilt.

Think I shall have to sell it as is and hopefully somebody out there will want it to break it or to replace the gearbox themselves with a second hand unit.

Sad times. I need to sell it by the 4th of Feb as I leave then.
Anyone fancy a broken Landcruiser? Does have 12 months worth of MOT though...
