So HDJ 80 1994 VX Auto that i bought last month (number 3 to the fleet!).

Spent the last month getting the brakes working right and getting the ABS to work correctly. Fornt axle rebuild on left side and on Monday it passed the French MOT.

I thought all would be good for the 1500km road back to Hungary for Christmas time at our house there....

Yesterday driving through Munich traffic, I heard a noise as if I had driven over 2 sheets of metal... except the noise came from the gear box... Kept driving a bit as no more noise and, no other signs.. then a few mnute slater a more wizzing like noise starts.

Quickly I decide to pull over and stop.

The car basically had no more power and makes strange noises when in R,D,2 or 1. It also will not hold its own on a small slope on P.

The car is now on it's way on a flat bed to Hungary and I hitched a lift to Hungary last night on one of my mates trucks.

Form speaking to various people I get opinons of gearbox is gone to torque coverter only.

Any ideas or help welcomed!!

the tow truck operator could do with a lession in strapping the cruiser down.

You should near strap a vehicle down from the body like that always on the axle so the suspention can move, did he use the winch on the front aswell?

Sorry cant help with the gearbox issues

Q who is your recovery company that you are a member of?

His mate hauled it home for him so hardly room for complaint there and i'm sure a cruiser can handle such terrible abuse :icon-rolleyes: . The guy is asking for help diagnosing his gearbox troubles ?

It wasn't far to be fair.

So does anybody have an real opinion about the gearbox?...

Had what might be a similar problem with mine earlier in the year, no drive in any gear, high or low ratio, when put into gear a loud (horrific) sounding grating noise, like trying to put a manual into gear without using the clutch!

It was the transfer box.

However, when I put mine into park it locked in, and had no noises then so yours may be a different issue

Thanks for the reply, fingers crossed...

The clattering noise could have come from the 'flex plate' where it connects to the torque converter, this often allows the car to start but the sound is like clattering metal as the plate distorts under the load from the starter. The torque converter is bolted to the flex plate so there could be a similar noise. The torque converter does not 'hold' the car when in PARK this is a separate 'pawl' and they rarely fail. FWIW if you have a centre diff lock switch did you try this, or perhaps shift transfer to LOW which would bring in the centre diff lock? The reason I ask is that if you engaged the centre diff and the car drove then it could be a differential/driveshaft/drive flange failure, this would in effect bring the car to a standstill without the centre diff being locked. Trying to find out what is going on with some more ideas so get back to the forum as there is plenty of collective experience here.

regards

Dave

Many years ago I had a Volvo 264 that had similar issues. I was parked up with the car in 'P', when I came to start her up and move off there was an audible 'ping' noise as I took it out of park. As I moved off it was clear from the noises that something was not right. As time went on it got progressively worse and displayed similar traits to what you are describing here.

I ended up getting the gearbox removed and it turned out that the parking pawl had snapped and was moving about in the gearbox causing the other issues.

Not saying this may be the case with yours but, just thought I would mention this one.

Keep us updated when you get to the bottom of this one.

Thanks for all the replies so far.

Car is now back in Hungary at a specialist called Sandlander. They specialise in all Land cruisers, google them and you can see there work.

Will keep you all updated on status as it happens, hopefully they will start tomorrow...

So they have found the issue , unfortunately my man who can translate the from Hungarian to English is on the Dakar managing the Hungarian Land Cruisers on the race....

Here are 2 pictures of the parts that they have change....20150108_110532.jpg 20150108_110607.jpg cost including labour approx. 900 euro!

Any idea what it is?

Anything else I should look out for...

Worn out, that's what I would say it is :wtf:

But I'm surprised it's so worn, maybe ATF failure due to overheating... ? I'm no expert, but I'm sure you'll get some educated responses soon.

Transfer box shaft and gear that is, nothing to do with Autobox. Looks like its been low on oil or suffered oil pump failure. Seen it before in heavily loaded worked trucks. First they get real noisy under load (chattering almost) then they strip the splines like yours.

I wrongly thought the transfer box would be splash fed, I didn't realise there was a pump in there too.

Is that rust? Looks like water has got in. Rust is very abrasive and would wear through splines unless the gearwheel is pressed on which I don't think they are. Transfer oil should be changed every 36k miles.

Yes there is a pump and it's driven from a sort of small key that sits between the T box and the A box or G box on a manual. Could be that the two were split at some point in the past and that key not put back in. It's pretty small and very easy to miss.
