How did you decide? (Series 60 vs 80)

Pics of the "rather comely companion" might go down well too

She has a tendency to wander in front of the camera from time to time, so we'll see. ;)

Seriously though, good luck with the purchase, which ever model you choose

Horrible timing, but last weekend about a half a dozen potential Cruisers sold, after being on the market for about a month on average. I'm down to some pretty thin pickings, so might have to grab a dog or settle on a 4runner :(

Sods law the right one is never available when your ready to buy , another month or even 6 is not long to wait for the right purchase when its likely to be with you a very long time , it drives me crazy when i've decided what i want and can't find it but once i've decided nothing else will do and i don't care how long it takes to get it .

OK - so I found an 80 I dismissed earlier that is looking like a good deal, now. Low mileage (178,000), really nice looking, but has been on and off the market for a long time, due to the transfer case being disconnected. (It would only drive in 4 wheel drive). The mechanic I engaged to do a pre purchase inspection turned out to be the same guy who maintains this vehicle, and after finding out that I was interested in the car, said he would replace the transfer case for $750.

The 62 I am now looking at is looking sketchy. 204,000 miles, over revs from 2-3 as it warms up, has a newly installed rebuilt and already malfunctioning starter, marginal tires, leaking rear main seal, brake booster leaking, power steering pump leaking and has a bit of surface rust, incipient bubbling on two parts of the body. The owner is pretty clueless on maintenance, and has difficulty describing what's been done to it.

Both rides are the same price. I'm sorry to say I'll probably go with the 80, if nothing else based on the maintenance history.

I'm biased I know, but I think you'll find that you've made the right choice.

I still can't get my head around the "2 wheel drive" concept of an 80, as I'm only used to the all-time 4WD of my 80 similar to all the UK 80s that the majority of this forum are familiar with.

Mine is permanent 4WD with optional diff locks, where all 3 (Centre, Rear and Front) are controlled electrically from dash mounted switches. I find that great, no jumping out to manually select drive from freewheeling hubs and so forth.

Anyway, the 80 is a tough brute when you want it to be and over time, I think you will appreciate the extra comfort that it delivers.

I guess that yours is a 4.5l straight 6 petrol, whereas mine is 4.2l straight 6 diesel, HZJ 80 (without turbo).

Enjoy!

Go with the 80, the only reason in my opinion to go with a 60 is the looks and less electrical, the 80 is a better vehicle on and off road.

Well, the comely lass has successfully beaten the guy with the 80 down in price, so I have purchased it today, sight unseen. (gulp!) No worries, though, the mechanic who I have asked to check out the cars I was looking at has known this one since it was new and thinks it's a great deal. It gets a new transfer case and rear main seal tomorrow, so it should be ready for me to drive when I arrive in Phoenix on Saturday. I'll head over to the Series 80 tech section then. Cheers!

Congratulations. Hope it's a good one. Looking forward to the pics :icon-wink::whistle:

I'm trying to figure what, exactly, that color is. I've settled on "beige-ish-y like".

Does 'Gold Mist' sound better?

Doesn't that have something to do with pornography?

As soon as temperatures are better for painting, it is going to be "Sapphire Blue".

That is the long term plan. Lots involved including cutting the frame to get the wheel base right to fit in the fenders correct. I have to get my wife's 80 built for off road this summer, it is stock now. I also have a 92 80, complete frame off with Vortec swap started and I work on this one when I have a laps between customer rigs. Like anything else, all it takes is time and money and we are running out of both :icon-cool:
