Decided at 200k it is time the ole cruiser had a freshen up of the injectors.

Looking at the FSM, it reckons take out and replace - easy.
I'm thinking being wedged in there over 20 years, it may not be so simple.

Anybody had issues getting these out and any advice for any welded in types?
Don't see anything on them that would allow a good grab with any tool.

Was also thinking when replacing I could put some 'O' ring friendly grease around the bodies to help install. Couldn't see it doing any harm?

Any pointers/look outs appreciated.

A slide hammer (or tool made up like one) screw a bolt in the top of the injector and out they come. I did give the injectors a little move carefully clockwise and anti clockwise using some molegrips - I'm not sure this is a good idea but for me it worked.

Make sure you get the old injector seals out if they don't come out with the injectors. I used a long bolt and screwed it gently into the 2 seals that wanted to stay in the holes.

New injector seals and o rings when you refit (the latests ones are aluminium, the ones that come out will be copper), and new washers for the tops of the bolts in the spill off pipe (if that is what its called along top of the injectors).

Torque wrench for the correct torques on everything.

id use some thread lock on the injector clamp bolts for good measure.

I took the bonnet off to get at the injector closest the bulkhead. Mark the hinges with a marker pen and it'll go back in the right spot when you refit it.

RVS do a good job on refurbishing the injectors and tips as needed. needs specialist equipment being a dual pressure injector.

Seems like a good excuse to purchase a slide hammer. Been looking for a reason for a while now.:dance:

I was thinking of getting exchange recognditioned ones but after reading this maybe getting RVS to fix up the originals might be a better option:

1HD-T injectors have 3 different capsules used and are dependent on the pump part number. If you have had an exchange set before, it is possible they are not matched to the pump.

23600-17010 (01/1990 - 07/1992) 6
23600-17030 (08/1992 - 09/1992) 6
23600-17031 (10/1992 - 06/1993) 6
23600-17032 (07/1993 - 12/1994) 6

No idea what capsules are but there must be 4 different injector part numbers for a reason.
 
I have not replaced this type of injector but lubrication sounds sensible. I have had occasions when O rings have bound up and partly sheared, or rolled/squeezed out. Very annoying as nothing appears to be wrong until it starts leaking.
 
I've heard good reports about RVS. I've talked to them as well. They are old established.

Tried to find somewhere local but when I mentioned 2 stage injectors the phone went silent!

got to wondering if these various changes to the injector 'capsules' could be to do with emissions restrictions being introduced in the 90s.
Probably way off but baffles me why so many injector changes to the same 12v engine.

Probably have no real effect if different type got used but I know very little about the injection/pump side of things.
 
Would warming the engine before removing them help? I've read this for the glow plugs so am not sure if it would work as well for the Injectors?
 
The part numbers can be found on a plate on the side of the pump. Whether the pump is original or not RVS will be able to tell you if the numbers suit your vehicle. That is unless someone has altered the pump settings. Anyway RVS are very helpful on the phone for a general chat about all this. I would be very interested to see how you get on.
 
Hey Guys to bring and old thread back to life.

I am keen to have my injectors looked at (1996 HDJ81) and wanted to ask how you went and if it was a siple enough job to get them out.

Given this thread is a few years old is it still recommended to have them tested and repaired or has the cost of injectors come down enough to just buy new or refurbished and replace?

I had mine tested and refurbished by S and S diesels in Hampshire for around £80 each plus VAT. Getting them out wasn't too tricky. I used a long 90 degree pry bar, it was a reasonably simple mater of keeping the bar in place and applying some leverage. Getting the washers below them out was tricky but I managed this with a wire coat hanger. I think I was lucky.
 
Did my 12V a few years ago, injectors all came out easy, bought the nozzels on ebay for about £180 then, £12/ injector to rebuild and reset and simple replace. I'm not sure about the 24V ones but I want to replace the ones in the 24V auto I'm using at the mo soon, I think its a good investment as it cleans up the exhaust emissions and increases fuel economy slightly.
