So I spent yesterday evening and a portion of today travelling from near to Brighton to Holyhead in a HDJ81 manual I bought.

It was my first trip to England since the 90's excluding a couple of stags that were fly in/fly out and can't really remember anything jobs:wtf:

I did notice a few things though, some that have changed, some haven't!!

(1) British Rail or whatever it goes by nowadays has got shinier but its DAMN expensive.

(2) Is there a road, main/motorway/green lane even that isn't undergoing some form of road works ANYWHERE:wtf::wtf:, if there is I couldn't find it.

(3) English people are still very friendly and helpful, more so than the Irish in my opinion, especially in shops/restaurants etc:clap:

(4) The roads are very busy, even at night. And why do so many people drive those ridiculous little match box cars that would fit in the boot of a Volvo.

(5) I thought health and safety had reached a new level of pathetic in Ireland, England is in a different league. I nearly went deaf listening to safety announcements in about 5 languages and I nearly fell over all the bloody signs/warnings/coloured tape/cones/safety officers. I was even stuck on the train platform with a gaggle of 'safety specialists', well that's what their matching coats had on them.

(6) This one might be a little contentious so make what you want of it......... I've thought that over the past 15 years or so that the abundance of 'other ethnic groups' in English tv/media was some kind of awful political correctness thing. I also thought a lot of foreigners had moved to Ireland.
I was wrong on both counts, I even stayed in a kind of pub/hotel thing in the middle of nowhere in a tiny village in Buckinghamshire that was run entirely by foreigners.
Please don't read anything unpleasant into this comment, its purely an observation much as other people have observed in trip reports that a certain town may be unpleasant for example. Remember its nearly 16 years since I last was really in the UK mainland so this is a 'trip report' for me.

(7) Little Chef is still stuck in the 1950's. But didn't I sit through some awful tv show where Hester what's his face 'revolutionised' their menu?? Or was that something else??
Its still a massive improvement on McDonalds though!

There you go, most peoples 'own country' on here summarised as a short trip report. Wonder what you think?

Sadly it wasn't really a pics kind of trip!! Must say I think I'll be making a trip back to Wales, I drove up the A5 through Snowdonia and it looked really beautiful. So I'll take plenty of pics then!

Was a great super long (well over 600km) 'test' drive of the new truck though. It was very nice, very comfortable and it used lots of diesel. No major technical issues discovered, could do with replacing the clutch in the near(ish) future and could do with two new back tyres but I knew all that anyway. And a bloody good clean out inside. The lad that owned it had actually managed to fill the little cubby hole thing beside the gear stick with what looked like lucozade some time soon before I came to collect it. Tasty, and it only got better when I stuck my box of cigs into said lucozade in the dark last night.:icon-cry:

Yes know it well yogi. not very far from me at all. its all on john paul gettys land. the billionaire who was kidnapped and held hostage for ransom money. they cut his ear off as well and posted it to his family to proove they meant business. hes also responsible for bringing red kites back to this country. met him one evening when we landed a hot air balloon on his front lawn. wasnt very amused.

This is the one I bought, had hoped to take a few pictures of my own but its absolutely throwing it down here this morning, so this is the ebay link

Basically its filthy inside but everything seems to work, diff lockers, sun roof windows OK and I just drove 650km in it so its had a good test run!!

Few little niggles but nothing major. Needs springs and shocks behind but I'm going to upgrade the suspension anyway so I don't really care.

Oh and its getting near to needing a clutch, a bit juddery in first when cold.

Manual box seems to be perfect, changing up and down no bother.

Looks good to me, got all the bits and bobs and 12 less winters than the UK equivalent. Get the cavities rust proofed and it will last for years.
Another victim on the slippery slope

Looks good and solid.

Just swap the tyres round so the whites on the inside :icon-wink:

Bet your happy with the buy. Lockers as well.... Not a lot of the imports have them:icon-biggrin:
