This week I've been doing more filling and sanding on the new roof.

The gutter on the drivers side was a little bit bent.

P1000724.jpg

P1000725.jpg

Managed to get it a lot straighter using a block of wood and a hammer.

P1000728.jpg

I then discovered that the B pillar is a bit worse than I originally thought.

P1000729.jpg

It looks fine on the outside of the truck, but behind the plastic trim on the inside its a bit bent.

P1000730.jpg

More filling.

P1000735.jpg

P1000736.jpg

I then sanded the whole roof down with wet n dry paper.

P1000747.jpg

Which revealed a few small holes in the filler.

P1000748.jpg

P1000750.jpg

P1000751.jpg

So out with the fine surface filler.

P1000752.jpg

Primer arrived this week.

P1000753.jpg

I bought this compressor a few months ago and this would be its first spray job. :icon-cool:

P1000754.jpg

The cheap spray gun I will be using.

P1000757.jpg

And water trap.

P1000761.jpg

Set the garage up as best I could. Far from ideal, dark, cold and not much room to work.

P1000758.jpg

P1000760.jpg

Masked sunroof opening.

P1000762.jpg

Primer on.

P1000763.jpg

P1000764.jpg

P1000765.jpg

P1000766.jpg

In between coats of paint I've been busy stripping the truck down.

P1000767.jpg

P1000768.jpg

P1000769.jpg

What an absolute bitch the front wings are to remove! :wtf:

Thats the third thing I dislike about the 70 series design, along with the rear wheel bearings and front brake discs.

Their are 3 bolts each side which are really difficult to get to and undo.

P1000770.jpg

Also made a start removing the dash.

P1000773.jpg

Blue top coat.

P1000774.jpg

P1000776.jpg

P1000778.jpg

Came out OK but their are a few runs.

In my defence it was dark, 11pm and I'd been working for 16 hours straight. :icon-smile:

Proper air fed mask would have been nice.

All I had were paper masks. :icon-confused:

P1000780.jpg

P1000781.jpg

Quite enjoyed the spraying, found it therapeutic and very satisfying.

I want to respray the entire truck one day. :icon-cool:

Time to get up, finish stripping the dash out and get the new roof fitted. :violin:

Glad its all starting to come together but seriously you NEED to get a proper mask! Those paper things arent doing anything. Its the Isocyanates in 2k paints that WILL (not might or could) do some damage and they are invisible tasteless and odourless. They are proven the cause asthma, lung cancer, throat cancer, polyps in the lungs and a raft of other things and you wont know the damage you have done to yourself for a few years. Im sorry to say it but that session in a confined space will have done some damage to you. :(

Ideally you need an air fed system but they are prohibitively expensive. At very least you need to get something like this with these 6059 ABEK1 cartridges and ideally the P3 particulate pre-filters and retainers too. If you shop around you should you should be able to find them cheaper than Axeminster just make sure you get the correct cartridges.

Please Ben look after youself we want to see your brilliant threads going for years to come. :icon-cool:

I best not do it again then without a proper mask.

Update time!

P1000784.jpg

Front doors off and dash out first.

P1000785.jpg

P1000786.jpg

P1000788.jpg

Side windows out.

P1000791.jpg

P1000789.jpg

Weapons of choice! :icon-twisted:

P1000790.jpg

P1000793.jpg

With the B and C pillars carefully cut along the roof gutter, and then into the seems at a 45 degree angle, We could roughly cut through the A pillars.

P1000795.jpg

And the roofs off!

P1000798.jpg

P1000797.jpg

P1000799.jpg

Needed to trim the front next.

P1000800.jpg

I've seen a fair few 70's now rust along the bottom of the screens.

I had intended to sort my rust out at some point, but hadnt intended doing it this way!

P1000801.jpg

All the rust is around drain holes, so I suspect the holes get clogged up with crap and the water cant escape.

P1000802.jpg

P1000803.jpg

Needed to trim the stumps back next.

P1000805.jpg

P1000807.jpg

P1000808.jpg

P1000809.jpg

P1000811.jpg

The front panel took a bit of careful cutting because its double thickness and we wanted to cut the inner and outer sections in different places.

P1000812.jpg

Scrap pile was mounting up.

P1000813.jpg

Got the new roof out and onto the tresels ready for trimming.

Looks like an OK paint job on the pic below.

P1000814.jpg

Look a bit closer and its patchy with loads of runs!

P1000815.jpg

Not too bothered as I want to give the whole truck a coat of paint at some point. :icon-cool:

I found having the truck in this state slightly over whelming. kind of like shit what the hell am I doing? :icon-rolleyes:

P1000816.jpg

Anyway........................back to the build.

We flipped the roof over to trim the inner section below the screen.

P1000817.jpg

(Used the prayer mat to protect the fresh paint from damage.)

P1000818.jpg

Hopefully it wont look like this ever again!

P1000819.jpg

The roof section was quite heavy and awkward but we managed to carefully lift it on.

P1000820.jpg

Needed a bit more trimming.

P1000821.jpg

P1000822.jpg

We clamped the A pillar in place and started trimming the joints, scribing the 2 pieces of metal together.

P1000823.jpg

We clamped the bottom of the other A pillar in place, so now both A pillars were clamped and ratchet strapped in place.
It was then that we realised that the roof was twisted to all the pillars, and at the back was 65mm out. :icon-rolleyes:

After much looking and thinking we came to the conclusion that the bulk head must be bent/twisted. :icon-cry:

We checked the floor pan, sills, and body mounts for any signs of distortion or twisting but couldnt see anything. :icon-confused:

P1000824.jpg

P1000825.jpg

At this point I honestly thought is this the end of the road for my 70. :icon-rolleyes:

After a phone call to my mate who has experience of repairing car bodies, we carried on.
We were both very sceptical about whether we would be able to sort out the issue we had.

The main issue we had was to twist/pull the rear of the roof over so that it lined up with the tops of all the pillars took a lot of force and we were worried it was twisting the windscreen surround. :icon-confused:

So we carried on cutting, clamping and ratchet strapping the body into shape.

(The tarp also made an appearance due to the great British weather.)

P1000826.jpg

P1000827.jpg

The joints were slowly closing up nicely as we trimmed and clamped everything.

P1000828.jpg

P1000829.jpg

The way we chose to join the front below the windscreen turned out perfect.

P1000830.jpg

P1000831.jpg

More trimming.

P1000832.jpg

P1000833.jpg

P1000835.jpg

P1000837.jpg

I bloody love ratchet straps! So useful and versatile, they worked particularly well in this instant.

P1000838.jpg

P1000839.jpg

So the joints.........................

They all turned out great apart from 2. But 2 bad ones out of 12 isnt bad. :icon-biggrin:

P1000840.jpg

P1000841.jpg

P1000842.jpg

P1000843.jpg

P1000844.jpg

P1000845.jpg

P1000846.jpg

First bad one.

Not a huge problem. I will plate over it and then the plastic trim will cover it over. :icon-wink:

P1000847.jpg

P1000848.jpg

Second bad one.

P1000849.jpg

P1000850.jpg

Bit more tweaking with the ratchet straps and panel beating.

P1000852.jpg

P1000854.jpg

And we were ready to tack weld everything. :icon-twisted:

So this is the welder I've borrowed off my mate. Unfortunately he didnt have any gas for it.

P1000855.jpg

Now if I was staying in the UK id have taken out bottle rental with BOC or Air Products. But as im leaving very soon I decided not to do this.

So I've decided to use little bottles. They are £10 each and I cant see me using more than 2 or 3.

P1000856.jpg

So my mate went round cleaning the areas where we wanted to weld and I followed behind tacking everything.

P1000859.jpg

P1000857.jpg

P1000858.jpg

With everything tack welded we could remove the clamps and ratchet straps.

We did this carefully one by one and watched for any movement.

We were then able to see how the rear doors closed.

P1000861.jpg

Very happy by this point, gaps looked good and the doors closed and the latches engaged perfectly!

But also quite worried about whether to front doors would fit and close properly, and also the windscreen and whether that would fit properly. :?

Passenger door next.

Also worked perfectly. :icon-cool:

P1000862.jpg

P1000863.jpg

P1000864.jpg

Followed by the drivers side.

P1000865.jpg

P1000866.jpg

P1000867.jpg

So by this point I was pretty stoked that all the doors were fitting so nicely. But I was a bit worried about whether the screen would fit Ok.

Fitted great!!! :banana-wrench:

P1000868.jpg

P1000869.jpg

So nice not to be looking through perspex anymore.

P1000870.jpg

Very pleased with how the panel cuts have worked out below the windscreen.

P1000871.jpg

My perfect paintwork.

P1000872.jpg

P1000873.jpg

P1000874.jpg

With day light fading fast we had a tidy up and got all the tools away.

P1000875.jpg

P1000876.jpg

So as you can imagine I'm very happy and relieved that today has gone so well! :icon-biggrin:

Once its all done and with all the doors closed there wont be any visible signs that the truck has had a new roof!

With the doors open their might be a few signs of welds, but I will grind down my welds and fill and paint them so they might not be visible at all.

Huge thanks to my mate for his help. Couldn't have done it with out you dude.

Tomorrow I will fully weld everything and then start rebuilding. :icon-wink:

Got one last laning trip planned for a few weeks time, around my beloved Shropshire lanes with my mates!

Less than a month now till my insurance runs out which wont be getting renewed. :icon-cry:

I never cease to be amazed at what you can do in one day Ben.

Well done Ben, from what looked like a big pile of poop, and "oh my god, what have I done" it is really starting to take shape.
I am sure at the end of this, no one but us will know any thing about it.

Your secret is safe with me.

Gra.
