I am currently having my engine re-built and have been advised to replace the injectors.
Presumably they mean the nozzels.

Found some on ebay, supposedly manufactured by Denso

Would this be a dodgy place to buy them?

How do i know if they are the correct ones? there is part numbers listed.

can you get the part numbers off your current ones .. then match them up with the new ones

Got mine off the bay. They were fine. Even my diesel fitter chappy was happy with them. But, there are some very ambiguous claims about the origins of some of these. They will say things like Denso part number or original part number. Perhaps Toyota part or some such. The ones I got were absolutely fine but they were definitely not original. Unless it categorically says manufactured by or something that is beyond misunderstanding then it's doubtful that they are Denso. All the part numbers will match I am sure. Mine did.

I did a lot of research and it appears that many of these aftermarket ones are most likely off the same production line as those that go to the factory.

Are the injector nozzles easy enough to change yourself, or does it have to be done by a specialist?

Specialist. Unless of course you happen to be a diesel injection fitter - which I am guessing that you aren't. They have to be set up to the correct opening and closing pressures. It's not just a case of screw on a new one, I'm afraid. My local chap charged me £130 to fit and set up 6. It cured all my probs.

One of those is just for the nozzles and the other is for new injectors ;)

You will need the full injectors unless you can find someone to re-furbish you old injectors using new nozzles (which would cost probably the same or more than just buying the new set).

What was the agreement for rebuilding the engine - if it was for the head and block to be stripped down and rebuilt then I would have thought that the labour element was already agreed, just the cost of parts to be paid for.

Problem is, of course, if you now ask the garage if the agreed price includes setting up the injectors they will invariably say no.

Out of interest, how much they charging you for the rebuild?

Pete

Doesnt look overly expensive - a second hand 2.4 seems to be about 400/500 on fleabay, and thats with no warranty. You didnt fancy them putting a 3.0 back in it?

The problem I am heading towards with mine and considering an engine swap is that the £1300/1400 (or more if I go for what I really want, the Lexus V8), would buy another LJ78 ! On of my mates is selling a mint Range Rover Classic,89000 miles, for £1200 ( I dont want another LR, just using it to illustrate the point).

In relation to your original question, if you've got a good rapport with the garage then check with them if the labour is included - I use one garage for all vehicles except the wifes Disco 4, it does make a difference.

Cheers

why dont you do what im doing and buy a donor vehicle, like a 4 runner for the engine? or lexus if thats the route you want to take.

i paid £650 for my 4 runner, if i sell my old engine for £450, and weight in whats left i will make my money back. im also going to sell all the drive train and the wheels and a few other bits, so i will actually end up making money out of fitting a new engine. :D

i dont quite understand why people are so keen to fit a big thirsty petrol engine to a heavy 4x4? ok the V8 will sound beautiful and you will have loads of power. but all the torque is high up the rev range unlike diesel engines, and you cant run on chip fat! :)

I don't have the time, space, or technical know how :(

Mine is a diesel, a 2.4l-te with an auto box and overdrive, its not the most powerful truck in the world, but it is lovely to drive on long journeys and in traffic with the auto box.

I want to try and keep it as original as possible

I'm getting confused,

Do i need the full injectors?, or just the nozzles?

Just the nozzles. The whole injector is basically a tube and it never wears out. Its usually very expensive to replace the whole injector.
Any good injector shop can do it.
They are not that hard to install them yourself once they have been reconditioned.

Hi Ben

I am watching your build thread, and the 3.0 Kzt option is almost certainly the best one, but I do like a petrol V8......

Since last posting on your build thread I've been to look at two 4Runners, both of them turned out to be Surfs!

I think you were lucky to get the 4runner at that sort of price, certainly down here in the south west they arent common and seem to be more expensive, you could have re-sold it down here with an mot for about £1500 - £1800 !

i know there rare, since getting mine ive not seen many on ebay. before getting mine there was a perfect one on ebay for £300 mot failure on rust, but the auction ended early as some one had obviously gone up with a pile of cash and snapped it up. so i decided then that if i saw one thats what id do. the chap i got it off would have got over a grand for it if hed left it on ebay. :)

it has got almost a full mot and 2months tax.

id be interested to know what sort of mpg a lexus V8 70 series gives.

Did you ask the garage if the price included refitting new ones?

If the ones in the link are genuine toyota its a good price - doesnt sound like your mechanic wants to recondition the old ones for you.
