Lower swivel stud/nut security

Hello all, I'm in the process of replacing the lower swivel hub studs, and given the catastrophic consequences of these falling out whilst driving I wondered if they could be secured further, beyond torque and loctite.

has anyone tried anything? I was thinking about drilling through the very end, unthreaded part of the studs and fittings small split pins to stop the nuts coming off completely if they loosened. or perhaps lockwire to stop the studs undoing too?

maybe a stupid idea, but there's no such thing as a stupid question!

thanks, rob

I tried drilling the nuts with a drill jig, so I could lock wire the nuts to each other. The drill bits I had would not touch them, way too hard.

I've bought a set of these to fit next time I'm under there.

But I do also think the correct installation procedure with genuine nuts and studs is the first step to reliability.

I did buy some aftermarket studs to replace a missing one, but did not like the feel of it as I was torquing it up. Felt like it was going to shear. Fitted a genuine one. Been ok since including 4 weeks off roading in Portugal

Making sure the threads are completely degreased is the key, but those nut huggers looks like they'd be good insurance.

Yeh agree proper installation with clean dry threads is the major factor. Loctite is not needed. I installed some of the nut huggers when I did mine for peace of mind.

If you drive off-road regularly, checking these nuts should be one of the regular checks.

Those nut huggers look just the job! Thank you, and that's a very dangerous website, I could spend lots of pocket money on there!

Toyota themselves are happy to trust a tab lock washer to hold wheel bearings in .

@Rob-o tell me about it, I just have.... have to say the quality really does not disappoint. Dont feel short changed

I think to degrease the threads on stud and hub really well is important and then wind in tight with double nut on the outer end. i don't think the Toyota build has anything in addition to this.

Interestingly there is no torque spec for putting the studs in the hub as they don’t need to be tight. Just a slight pinch up will do. If all is clean and assembled properly they are unable to come loose due to the torque applied to the nut.
