I have been thinking about this for a while and even bought a Sankey as a project. However, I have to yet work out what advantage the trailer will give me, towing 750kg versus 100kg roof tent.

I was in portugal last year and saw some excellent demountable campers designed for offroad and the hi-lux. I am swaying towards building a demountable teardrop or folding caravan, the main advantage has to be to get away from flappy canvas and give you some better winter insulation and possibly heat, hence the folding caravan conversion.

one option is to get something like this and put it onto the sankey

or fit something like this which may be easier?

all food for thought

this was the system I saw in portugal

Which makes me think there has to be a more comfortable option to a roof tent, however the roof tent is light and convenient but if the weather is terrible then a hard shell is much more desirable.

any thoughts?

For me the answer lay in asking myself what's the bare minimum i could accept being locked inside of for 24 hours without going insane .

That's a fairly stock off road camper trailer from a generic brand here in Aus; when you start looking at the more expensive stuff, the designs starts to get better... I'd have a look at the Drifta DOT5 and DOT6; the others start to get a bit bloated, but the DOT6 LM is the type I really like... I'd change the RTT to one on top of the trailer, and build the trailer a bit higher and run the trailer tent over the front of the trailer body, and over the boxes/esky/fridge, a bit more to get the bed space (although as long as there is space for 2 Expd MegaMats it's not a problem)

For me the vid just offers a few pointers , it needs more ground clearance tow hitch to tail . Looks to me like the storage box on the front of the trailer comes into contact with the spare wheel , and the most alarming for me the tent being on top and the full width of the trailer means it will be the first thing to take damage if you run into trouble on anything but flat ground . I'm looking at my trailer now thinking could I have followed him
