i found an original sales invoice for an 80 I have.

This was a pretty penny in it's day, equivalent to £82,692 today . This was a slightly discounted price as the OTR price was listed at £37297.00.

Big price difference between a GX and VX!

I think the main differences are cloth instead of leather, seats are manual not electric, no sun roof, no roof bars, not colour coded bumpers.
There might be other differences I can't bring to mind at present.

Need to look up some contemporary road tests or comparisons with its "peers"......not that it has any only dreamers, haha

97 VX was the "Amazon" swansong so all optional extra's were included . Heated seats shocks everyone who gets in my truck probably because despite all the comments I get about the truck for me its age is the best thing about it .

Working with a lad born in 97 today who grew up with a driveway lined with new Range Rovers and all he talked about was how modern it is inside .

I seem to remember the GX was only introduced as a result of the strength of the Japanese Yen or some import tax for a couple of years made Jap vehicles expensive .... I remember for a couple of years the Shogun was also available as a de speccced version with steel wheels and a base trim as were other Jap 4x4's ....don't remember the same issue for cars though ?

Which is part of the reason why I can't find anything I like to replace it ..... you don't get anything useful in more modern vehicles....just tech for techs sake that then throws a wobble .

couple of years ago when our lad was six, for the first time when i collected him from school he brought a mate home with him for tea.

shortly after starting the 80 his mate asked me what that noise was? i had no idea what he meant, for once there was no knocks whines or squeals. pulled up outside our house and turned the engine off. "its gone now" he informed me.

the noise he was referring to was the bloody engine..!

One of the 80 series' biggest strengths is what it hasn't got, more than what it has IMO. Electronics! Compared to a modern SUV an 80 is quite unrefined and lacks "facilities" but I'll stick with analogue thankyou.

I still have the original bill for mine somewhere at just over £38k, registered new in NI in Jan'98 and reregistered in April on an English plate.

A really late one then.

Decoding the VIN came up with a build date of March'97 although it looks like it's a bit earlier on the production run than your's Andy. Possibly sat in a showroom for a while. I'm sure I've seen a '98 S reg for sale on the net in the past. There must be a few.
