Really?

Even if unused, it would still be a 20+ year old vehicle, with degradation of electrics, rubbers, etc, etc... Personally I'd struggle to justify paying much more than £20-25k for a stock 80 series, regardless of the mileage etc.

One that's rebuilt, decent usable mods, etc.. maybe a bit more. But north of £30k? Dunno...

You can bet that if such a vehicle turned up it would probably be snatched up by some speculator intent on flipping it for huge profit. When 80 prices start approaching £20k, that's when I'd start looking for a good V8 100 series which, for me, would be the logical next step up from an 80 series.

Really? I mean really Really.

Now's the answer to how much a " new" 80 would be/is.

this price sorts the wheat from the chaff as they say.

In Oz, a high mileage ready for recon FTE engine will fetch near 20k AUD

Not sure about sorting the wheat from the chaff, Andy, more like separating the well off from their money. Some of the restomod companies charge outrageous fees. I can think of better uses for £200k TBH!

430 bhp. Way too much for that chassis/road holding even with mods.
The "mods" are pretty much what we are all running on 80's anyway .... no mention of a brake servo upgrade , OME springs while OK are not the best as we all know ( I still run them but would swap to Slinky progressive in a heart beat if I had the money )
That to me is a rip off motor ... it's worth 40K at best .... it's lost any originality that in the future will be where the value of any classic vehicle lies....
If I spent 30K on my 80 sorting any slight rust issues , importing from Oz a pump and injector upgrade , Intercooler and exhaust so I've got 300hp + from my FT it would arguably be a better vehicle and retain original engine .... no one would value it at over a 100K I'm sure .

"Restomods" are becoming more popular across all makes, even classics worth many times the value of a good 80 series to start with. Not sure how they get to £197k for a rebuilt 80 series. I wonder what the actual build cost was?

I don't know if I like that or not, Andy! Ambitious price, though...

Definitely not. Where was he thinking of going with that thing, in the UK??

I dont quite understand that style of build. Cant see what it adds to the vehicle. It's not like you can sleep in there like a full on camper body.
The execution looks to be well made, but not sure much more practicality is gained over leaving the back original and having a set of gull wings and a decent drawer system.

Well.....it's definitely not a MITS Alloy canopy...... !!!!!

What would you strap on that frame on the bonnet? Seems more useful for touring in a hot climate.

I have been looking into a Chevrolet v8 swap for my 80 (the existing 4.5 sadly needs a rebuild or replacement and a rebuild is very expensive). I got an estimate from an outfit which specialises in putting LS3s in Defenders and the cost, for a crate LS3, gearbox and adaptor for the transfer case would be in the region of £45k. The swap can be done using parts available off the shelf from Australia but there remains the problem of engine management and integrating the loom into the existing Toyota electrics and getting aircon to work. I'm now back to finding a replacement 1FZ that's not been run on LPG.

45k just for the parts? Or fitting all included? For that price I'd be expecting all the electrics and aircon to be working spot on!!

That was fully fitted and was an estimate rather than a quote. It's a big job and the first time they would have done it. Given the prices of the LS3 defenders they sell completed it lined up. I'd love to do an engine swap but these engines just aren't readily available here second hand. I guess in the states used LS engines can be had from scrapyards a lot cheaper.

Does the estimate include uprating of brakes, suspension and the rest of the transmission? A standard LS3 puts out around 430bhp with similar torque figures, way too much for standard 80 running gear IMO, plus if they've never done an 80 before they're bound to hit unforeseen problems and teething problems which will add to the labour cost. I agree an upgraded and fully sorted LS3 equipped 80 would be a very nice vehicle though!

No it didn't, but suspension and a big brake kit would have to be done too. A fully sorted 80 with double the power from a lighter engine with better fuel economy would be an awesome thing!
