Replacement starter motor issues 1HDT

My starter motor gave up. Symptoms where it just kept on running after the engine started and kept on going when the engine switched off. The starter did smell like something had burnt inside, so I opted to replaced it with a Kuhner starter motor (24v), rather than replace the solenoids. This worked great for a couple of weeks, but I started the car recently to an awful metal on metal grinding sound coming from the starter area. Quickly switching off the engine, again it kept on chugging, like the starter was trying to engage. What have I missed! Is there anything else I should check to help troubleshoot? I've attached some pictures of the new starter solenoids, including pitting etc, should anyone be able to help troubleshoot - thank you!

Also - this might be completely unrelated. But at the same time as all the starter issues, I rather suddenly lost drive and could only move in L (auto gearbox). I found the transmission oil cooler hose from the radiator was leaking, and replaced the hose (small, recent leak and fluid was still full).

Any help gratefully received.

Many thanks

New starter doing the same as the one it replaced means the problem is not the starter but before it . I'd be looking at the ignition switch .

Thanks Shayne. I'll test the starter now I have pulled it back off, so I can discount that, and then move onto the ignition switch - seems relatively common issue on IH8MUD. The new starter wasn't properly disengaging, which is a slightly different issue than before - but hopefully a replacement ignition switch will solve the problem. Thanks for the advice!

Check the wire from the ignition switch too the starter is good and not corroded . Check you continue to get a good voltage while the starter cranks... (should be battery voltage but I'm not sure if the solenoid voltage would only be 12volt even on a 24volt starter or this is also supplied by the 12v/24v change over solenoid that gives the starter motor 24v )
There seems to be a fair bit of arcing on the new copper contacts on the starter ... if the solenoid isn't getting a good amperage supply when the key is turned then it loosely connects the contacts and they can arc and weld themselves together momentarily giving the same symptoms as a stuck starter

Power to it the solenoid engages until the power is cut , ignition includes a momentary switch which won't give power unless you hold the button/key .
Typical fail i think would be starting issues caused by not enough power going to the solenoid whereas your issue is constant power . A constant live wire touching the momentary live .

That was interesting. Replaced the ignition switch, which seems to have fixed the problem. In the process discovered some distant previous owner had rigged up an engine immobiliser and well hidden switch I never new existed. The home made relay was all very corroded. Thanks for the advice. Hopefully solved for good.
