Should I upgrade injector nozzles - 1HDFT

I'm getting my injectors serviced next week and was wondering would it be worth upgrading the nozzles?

Looking for a little more power and have intercooler, 3" exhaust and pump tuning in mind to squeeze out some more horses.

Would it be worth upgrading the nozzles or just stick with standard?

Any advice welcomed

Hello mate,
I would very much doubt that there is a compatible nozzle that would give a greater burn or offer increased fuel delivery.
In fact, as opposed to a modern diesel injector (common rail electronic etc), these are designed specifically to match the design of the piston combustion chamber, jet angle, atomisation etc.
If you did meddle with different nozzles, if at all possible - there's a distinct risk of burning through the piston or valves if there was even a decent combustion at all.
The only real upgrades you can make are to ancillaries like a larger, higher boost blower, intercooling and of course getting the pump opened right up - which will increase the (alleged) global warming death cloud of wobbly eco doom death carbon soot type stuff from the exhaust pipe.
I already have to drive with gritted teeth at night when i see the rummage cloud in my rear view mirror, illuminated by a set of modern HID headlights on the car behind me :tearsofjoy:

Personally, and in all seriousness, I'd love to put the V8 6 litre 300 series unit in.... now that's a seriously powerful unit!
I can only dream though :-(

Hey mate, really appreciate the feedback! Looks like I'll stick with the OEM items for reliability and security!

While it's at the diesel shop, I may get the pump tuned but what's safe and what's not? +1 turn?

To be honest, the pump specialist would know how far is too far, but exhaust temps and smoke output would be the ones to keep an eye on.
Obviously, more fuelling equals more black smoke, and more boost pressure will reduce that (air/fuel ratios etc)... but - that then raises exhaust temps and youll be limited by the effects that will have on the pistons, valves, turbine and manifolds... plus risks of cracking the head or damaging the top piston rings with the extra combustion pressures.
Its a delicate balance and certainly not the sort of engine that can be tuned too highly.

Youll notice a massive change with new injectors and even a pump overhaul, valve clearances and a nice clean blower.
New fuel filter, air filter and even the fuel tank suction filter cleaned.

However - make sure you replace your timing belt (if the FT has one... might be chain?)

I think the 1-HDFT has exhaust DPF or bypass systems that also could be limiting power to reduce smoke.

One last trick is to follow the modification to the "boost limiting plunger diaphragm" - which there is a minor gain on. Theres a good few topics on here about how to tweek that, and on youtube.
Its an anti smoke device that limits the fuel injected before the turbo has generated enough boost to mix the fuel and air ratio properly.

Lots to do, lots to explore - but remember these are basically old school chugger diesel truck engines, not a nissan skyline

You can upgrade the injectors but...... You also need to upgrade the injection pump at the same time , you then need an upgraded turbo with more boost etc , you then should probably upgrade the headbolt's and you will need an intercooler..... you then need to have a 3inch exhaust system..... and an EG temp gauge.... there's a pattern here ... you just can't really upgrade piece meal ....it's really an all or nothing approach and really needs setting up on a rolling road .
The "one turn" approach to tuning a pump is very haphazard
Of course you can tweak and optimise what you have and can also gently give it a bit more boost and fuel and will notice a difference ..... but to get the big number increases in hp and torque it's not a cheap or in the UK easy thing to do .

Would you have a link to the Gturbo to suit the LC 24v

Cheers

Out of interest, do you know the boost pressure increase you're getting now with the GTurbo?
I'm running mine at15psi, it's good for about 28psi but mine is a manual transmission so I'm going to wait till I've got a new clutch waiting to go in before I crank it up anymore.. just in case it slips. The original CT26 was doing about 7psi. The difference is very noticeable.. :)

I would email Ryan at Gturbo or give him a call, he'll keep you right. Make sure and get a plumbing kit as well if you go for it.

I’m running 22 psi on my new g turbo, had the pump & injectors done as well, already got intercooler, 3" exhaust egt gauge etc etc, the difference is incredible with the new turbo & pump refurb / tune

What psi can the CT26 safety take?
Good question, but mines tired and stock - needing injectors and pump overhauling after 180'000 miles, and generates about 6psi.
I think its the same blower that's on the supra, MR2 and others.... so probably capable of being beasted - but again, if you're serious about going up in tune, a good quality aftermarket Aussie unit would help loads.
Avoid like the plague, anything chinese on hee-hee bay.... you see all sorts of new ones on there for below 500 quid. Guaranteed to disintegrate and scatter aluminium confetti through your intake valves when you're least expecting it!

As an alternative
There are loads of places in the UK that can rebuild or mod turbos .... in Agriculture and Plant world we get turbos rebuilt at the fraction of the cost of new ones and if the guys are reputable you will have a 2 or 3 year warranty ..... more than you get for a rink dinky chinky one....
Supras have been being modded for years and are doing well over 800hp so the CT26 knowledge is out there

I might look into a rebuild for sure! Wonder is it possible to fit a CT27 into the LC?

What kind of boost control are you guys using?

Ultimately, cooling is the limiting factor of diesel tuning. The Yanmar marine version of the 1HD-FT reliably puts out over 300bhp and 700nm of torque but obviously benefits from much more efficient intercooling.
